News & notes

For fans in the 518, an old skit from Hee Haw comes to mind, to the beat of "Gloom, Despair, & Agony On Me". Trust me, after what happened on Saturday, you'd be thinking of it, too.

Gloom: The Tri-City Valleycats were eliminated Saturday in the Frontier League playoffs vs. Quebec. The defending champs outscored the 'Cats to the tune of 27-7 in the final two games to advance to the finals for the 4th straight year.

With the 'Cats out of the tournament, baseball season is officially over in the 518, save for those of us armchair managers watching the big leaguers.

Despair: UAlbany is 0-3 under interim coach Jared Ambrose, and will host Cornell on Saturday night. No one saw this coming, but they should've, as UAlbany hasn't been the same since losing in the FCS semifinals nearly 2 years ago.

FWIW, due to WTMM's commitments to Yankee baseball, the Albany-Cornell game will be heard on 103.9 FM this weekend. The Great Danes will be back on WTMM on September 27 for the road game at New Hampshire.

Can Ambrose get the interim label off? Something tells me the answer to that is no, but I hope I'm wrong.

Agony: Christian Brothers Academy-Albany coach Bob Burns is in uncharted territory, with the Brothers on a 3 game losing streak dating back to last year's state title game. Burns' squad had a chance for revenge against their counterparts from Syracuse on Saturday, and were instead blown out of the stadium, 42-9. Luckily, Class AA play begins for CBA on Friday. Burns never lost more than a game at a time prior to the current streak, be it at CBA or Troy.

The Lansingburgh volleyball invitational wasn't reported to the press for unknown reasons, but we do know that Bethlehem won the tournament, defeating Troy in the finals. Meanwhile, Galway won their own tournament, which was smaller in scope by comparison.
