We wrote before about how Catholic Central is not fielding a men's basketball team this season, which is why Troy High scheduled Watervliet-Heatly in its place (January 2, Zotto Gym), but a quick check of the Colonial Council standings for fall sports shows that Catholic Central/Holy Trinity is not on the calendar for any sport, other than women's golf (and Troy doesn't have a women's golf team anymore), which suggests deeper problems for CCHS since relocating their campus to Latham a couple of years back.
Just needed to get that out there.
Now, let's get to recapping this week's action:
Football:
Current record: 2-1.
Jordan Canzeri's squad squashed South Glens Falls, 61-14, on Friday night. We haven't seen blowouts like this in favor of Troy since Bob Burns' run (2015-21), and, coincidentally, Burns & CBA scrimmaged Troy before the start of the season!
Next: Winless Columbia welcomes Troy on Friday after losing to Burnt Hills on Friday. Assuming Niskayuna's coaches have copies of game films, their trip to Troy on October 3 suddenly isn't the cupcake they thought it was! The Nisky game opens a 3 game homestand for Troy, with Bethlehem & LaSalle to follow before the Flying Horses close the season at Amsterdam. Suddenly, you get the feeling Troy could finish 2nd in the Capital Division, not 3rd, as a certain analyst suggest, or, they could upset Nisky and the whole applecart, then run the table.
Volleyball:
Current record 6-0 (4-0 Colonial Council).
A reminder that this does not include an 8-2 ledger at the Lansingburgh Invitational last week. Troy defeated Tamarac, Ravena, & LaSalle since then.
Next: Talia Valenti's group visits Cohoes on Tuesday, before returning home to play Lansingburgh on Thursday. After that, it's another tournament, this time at Averill Park, on Saturday.
Golf:
Current record: Incomplete.
We are waiting for the result of Friday's match vs. Voorheesville after Troy completed a season sweep of Ravena on Thursday. We will update when we get the information.
Next: Just 3 matches left, with the league championships scheduled for Friday. Jack O'Keefe's duffers are off until they visit Albany Academy on Wednesday. Then, it'll be a rematch vs. LaSalle on Thursday, the league championships on Friday, and the regular season ends September 30 vs. Schalmont.
Men's soccer:
Current record: 3-4.
Russell Hines' group dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Mohonasen on Thursday night, spoiling the momentum from beating Lansingburgh 2 nights earlier.
Next: The guys host Ichabod Crane on Tuesday night, then travel across town to play LaSalle on Thursday night before a rematch vs. Lansingburgh Saturday afternoon.
Women's soccer:
Current record 2-5-1.
Jarret Farrell's Lady Horses aren't surprising anyone anymore. Troy dropped a 2-0 decision to Cohoes last night, their 2nd straight shutout loss after falling to Mohonasen, 8-0, on Thursday.
Next: The ladies are idle until Thursday, when they host LaSalle. After that, they visit Ichabod Crane on Saturday for a lunch special.
Tennis:
Current record: 2-8.
Trevor McCarthy's team picked up their first two wins of the season to start the week, but the momentum was blunted with losses to Ichabod Crane & Ravena.
Next: The week starts with a home match vs. Schalmont, rescheduled from last month. Troy then hits the road to play Voorheesville on Wednesday before returning home for a rematch vs. Emma Willard on Friday.
Swimming:
Current record: 1-2.
Troy/Averill Park fell to Shaker on Wednesday.
Next: Albany is on deck this Wednesday.
