Troy High sports review, through October 4

The regular season is over for golf & tennis, with sectionals coming up soon. Volleyball & soccer will soon follow, and football likely will continue into November if they do make the playoffs.

Here we go.

Volleyball:

Current record: 11-0.

Troy has taken 1st place in the Colonial Council, and the standings on the league's website are not entirely up to date to begin with, after beating Mohonasen on Monday. Add in non-league wins over Ballston Spa & Albany, and, well, Troy just keeps on rolling.

Next: The non-league homestand concludes vs. Averill Park on Monday before Troy hits the road vs. Ichabod Crane on Tuesday. The Lady Horses then return home to entertain Albany Academy on Thursday.

Football:

Current record: 3-2 (1-1 Class A Capital Division).

Any hope for an upset vs. Niskayuna vanished early Friday, as the favorites to win the division routed Troy, 51-12.

Next: The homestand continues with Homecoming vs. Bethlehem, which has lost 3 in a row.

Swimming:

Current record: 3-2.

The Shen Invitational has not been reported as of press time. Otherwise, the team had the week off.

Next: It's a road trip to Niskayuna on Wednesday.

Men's soccer:

Current record: 5-7.

A marked improvement over last year, to be sure. Russ Hines' group bounced back from a loss to Albany Academy to beat Ballston Spa in non-league action.

Next: The guys are home Tuesday night vs. Voorheesville, then travel to Cohoes on Thursday & Averill Park next Saturday.

Women's soccer:

Current record: 2-8-1.

It's clear that Jarret Farrell's squad isn't sneaking up on the league this year. Troy dropped a non-league game to Tamarac earlier today, 4-0, to extend the current losing streak to 5 in a row. Yoiks!

Next: LaSalle comes in Monday night, a game rescheduled from September 25. After that, it's a road date with Voorheesville on Tuesday before returning home to play Cohoes on Thursday night.

Tennis:

Current record: 4-10.

Trevor McCarthy's unit is limping to the finish line with losses to Albany Academy & the Academy of Holy Names.

Next: A September 25 match vs. Voorheesville has been rescheduled for Tuesday before sectional pairings are released on Thursday.

Golf:

Final regular season record: 5-7.

Troy defeated Schalmont to start the week, but the regular season ended with a loss to LaSalle, which completed a season sweep.

Next: Sectional play begins Wednesday at the Fairways of Halfmoon. Joey Degnan leads the Troy contingent.

High School Fridays: Shenendehowa @ CBA, 10/3/25

Shenendehowa and Christian Brothers Academy have had quite the rivalry the last few years, and the latest chapter was written tonight. Both teams came into the game at 2-0 in Class AA, with Shen undefeated at 4-0 entering play, CBA 2-2.

If there was a fatal mistake made by Shen, it was Brian Clawson's decision to defer taking the opening kickoff to the 2nd half after wining the coin toss. You just don't do that against a Bob Burns team, because it usually backfires.

Sure enough, CBA marched down the field after taking the first half kickoff, and QB Archie Jones ran it in himself from 8 yards. Ted Gianalella added the extra point, and it was quickly 7-0, Brothers, less than 3 minutes into the game.

On Shen's 1st play from scrimmage, Joey Cardinale, who was a star three weeks ago vs. Niskayuna, took a screen pass from Jack Clawson, the coach's son, and sprinted 88 yards to the end zone. The extra point tied the game at 7. For less than 30 seconds. That's how long it took for CBA's Amare "Pop" Coffil to return the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the house, and, just like that, CBA was back in front, 14-7.

Shen's next possession ended with Clawson intercepted by CBA's Jack Hulett. The Brothers didn't waste any time, and Hulett was rewarded by catching a TD pass from Jones for 50 yards. CBA led, 21-7, after the 1st quarter.

If the first quarter felt like a track meet, well, things settled back to normal in the 2nd quarter. Chase McIntyre picked off Clawson, but, on the very next play, Jones was himself intercepted by Shen's Jakub Tomaszewski. And the score remained at 21-7 at the break.

Shen got the ball to start the 3rd quarter, and Clawson found Tomaszewski behind the defense for a 67 yard catch & run to the end zone, and, suddenly, it was 21-14. CBA then marched down the field, ending with Jones finding Gavin Potter for a 17 yard score. 28-14 Brothers after three. Jones took it in himself again less than three minutes into the 4th quarter to close the scoring. Despite the usual flurry of penalties hampering both teams, the two squads persevered, with CBA claiming 1st place in Class AA, 35-14.

Shen returns home to play Schenectady next week. The Patriots were wrecked by the Brothers last week. CBA stays home, and will have the TV spotlight again, as they'll host Shaker.

Other scores:

Guilderland 51, Schenectady 0. Two straight blowout shutout losses for the Patriots.

News & notes

This first item went under the radar, under-reported, back in July, but it's another body blow to the Capital Region bowling scene.

Tom Walsh, Jr., former manager at Uncle Sam Lanes, passed away in a drowning accident back in mid-July at 62. Walsh was regarded as one of the top players in the 518, but his reputation took a hit several months back, when he was relieved of his duties at USL for accosting a homeless loiterer.

I don't recall seeing an obit in the papers, so it was either kept private, or published only in El Cheapo Media's papers.

Rest in peace, Tom.
