News & notes

We are learning that Columbia High had players not only from their football team, but other teams as well, at a party in East Greenbush on September 26, leading to the Blue Devils forfeiting tomorrow's game vs. Troy. The team was left without enough players eligible for the game.

Following is a statement from the East Greenbush School District.

Troy will next play at Shaker on October 9.

Former Albany Academy star Jack Louridas, now at Yale, is filing suit against an Albany gym after a recent offseason accident. We'll see how far that goes.

Troy's volleyball team won't run the table this year in the Colonial Council, but they are making some noise in the league, just the same, after defeating Ichabod Crane, 3-2, Wednesday, avenging a loss to the Riders earlier this season. Troy sits at 7-3 overall.

News & notes

Coxsackie-Athens has cancelled the remainder of its 2026 football season due to a lack of players. This is the 2nd time in 3 years this has happened. The RiverHawks have had to deal with injuries, like everyone else, but with only 20 players on the current roster, the coaches felt it was just not sustainable with a month left in the season.

Schenectady High is mourning the passing of former football coach Carmen DePoalo, who passed away last week. DePoalo revived the program a few years ago, even though the current Patriots are not among the upper echelon in Class AA.

Troy High will make its 2nd appearance of the season, and 4th in 2 years, on Spectrum News 1 on Friday when they travel to Columbia. Kickoff will be around 7:05 pm. The Flying Horses have fallen from the top of the power rankings after last week's loss to Burnt Hills.

Update, 2:41 pm: The game isn't going to air, and Spectrum will send their cameras elsewhere after reports of an underage drinking party in East Greenbush surfaced earlier this week:

https://wnyt.com/top-stories/columbia-forfeits-football-game-against-troy-after-underage-drinking-party/

In effect, Troy gets an unscheduled "bye week".

Meanwhile, Troy's men's soccer team is 0-11 after suffering its 5th straight shutout Tuesday night, falling 5-0 to Voorheesville. Not enough offense, and certainly a glaring lack of defense is hurting Russ Hines' club with 5 games remaining. I recommend skipping sectionals this year. Troy did that years ago when they had a winning record in one sport (can't remember which), but bypassing sectionals this year would help the current players, who've already suffered enough humiliation.

High School Fridays: Week 4 roundup

For the 2nd straight week, Spectrum News 1's game of the week was a one sided affair, basically over by halftime. Meanwhile, game analyst James Allen's prediction that Troy would go undefeated went up in flames.......

The scores:

CBA 61, Shenendehowa 14.

Burnt Hills 28, Troy 14. Kevin DeBonis' Spartans avenged a sectional loss, but the road will be tough for Troy with Columbia & Shaker coming up.

LaSalle 33, Lansingburgh 7. Allen shared that the Cadets had dropped to Class B this season, hence no Collar City Cup game. Yet.

Mechanicville 38, Watervliet 6.

Queensbury 9, Bethlehem 7.

Guilderland 35, Schenectady 6.

Saratoga 35, Niskayuna 7.

Columbia 49, South Glens Falls 20. Uh-oh.

Schalmont 56, Scotia 14.

Johnstown 19, Fonda-Fultonville 7.

Shaker 43, Colonie 32.

News & notes

Troy High's Vulonn Forde is in the running for ABC10's Play of the Week from last week's win over Queensbury. The deadline is fast approaching before tonight's game vs. Burnt Hills.

In other Troy news, in case you missed it over the summer, Troy hired former Shaker coach Brandon Bradt to succeed Jamil Hood as men's varsity basketball coach. Hood left Troy in March after 2 seasons to take the job at his alma mater, Albany. Best wishes to both.

The Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk district has announced that their football field will be dedicated to Hall of Fame coach Gary VanDerzee, with ceremonies to take place as early as tonight, assuming the Ravens are home. An honor well deserved.

What is wrong with Troy men's soccer? Russell Hines' Flying Horses are 0-10 after getting throttled, 10-0, at Schalmont on Thursday.

The simple answer may be a lack of both offense & defense. Troy has been shut out in 4 straight games, and, apparently, the defense took the day off vs. the Sabres. Ouch!

Shenendehowa finally has a new team nickname, the Mustangs. They'll host CBA tonight on Spectrum News 1's Friday Night Matchup, as the Brothers make their 2nd appearance in 3 weeks.

Niskayuna is on the clock.

High School Fridays: Week 3 roundup, 9/18

Most of Friday's games could've been sponsored by Campbell's tomato soup, as they were one-sided.

Saratoga 28, Ballston Spa 7. The Blue Streaks bounce back after losing to CBA last week. Speaking of the Brothers.....

CBA 75, Albany 0.

Mohonasen 32, Bethlehem 28. Mohon came back from a 22 point deficit to win.

Troy 31, Queensbury 0. Jordan Canzeri's crew returns home next week to face Burnt Hills.

Shaker 45, Guilderland 0. This game was over at halftime, and they went with a running clock in the 2nd half, as they likely did with CBA as well.

Averill Park 32, Chatham/Ichabod Crane 8.

Niskayuna 44, Schenectady 6.

Schuylerville 56, Granville-Whitehall 0.

Canajoharie-Ft. Plain 48, Scotia 21.

Cobleskill-Richmondville 28, Johnstown 14.

Shenendehowa 31, Colonie 6.

Fonda-Fultonville 34, Coxsackie-Athens 0

Glens Falls 45, Cohoes 12.

Greenwich 24, Hudson 0.

Lansingburgh 63, Green Tech 0.

Ravena 21, LaSalle 14.

Schalmont 36, Gloversville 7.

Burnt Hills 56, South Glens Falls 20. It won't be that easy vs. Troy next week.

Hoosick Falls-Tamarac 39, Watervliet 0.

High School Fridays: Saratoga @ CBA, 9/11/26

10 months ago, Saratoga ended CBA's string of sectional titles in an instant classic that brought the Blue Streaks their first title in 10 years. The task at hand Friday night, then, was to prove it wasn't a 1-time thing.

Saratoga won the opening coin toss, but could do nothing, even with Cam Toomey at running back. CBA, with 1st year quarterback Matt Kowalski at the controls, marched down the field, with Kowalski running it in from 11 yards. Logan Kayser added the extra point, and it was 7-0 CBA after the first quarter.

The 2nd quarter began with Toomey evening things for the Streaks from 14 yards out. On CBA's next drive, Kowalski scored again on a quarterback keeper, and it was 14-7 Brothers at the break.

After a relatively quiet 3rd quarter, CBA seemed to put the game away 20 seconds into the 4th quarter with Jack Hulett running back a punt 77 yards to make it 21-7. Saratoga tried to make it interesting late as Bobby Morris found Tasiah Ladore for a 6 yard TD. However, after an exchange of interceptions, CBA ran out the clock to take a 21-14 victory.

Other scores:

Troy 34, Mohonasen 23.

Amsterdam 52, South Glens Falls 36. The Rams bounce back after getting blown out by Troy last week.

Averill Park 35, Hoosick Falls-Tamarac 0.

Queensbury 23, Ballston Spa 12.

Cobleskill-Richmondville 28, Schalmont-Duanesburg-Berne-Knox 15.

Voorheesville 23, Coxsackie-Athens 16.

Fonda-Fultonville 35, Mechanicville 8.

Ravena 54, Gloversville 33.

Granville 34, Scotia 0.

Hudson 34, Chatham-Ichabod Crane 20.

Johnstown 34, LaSalle 27.

Glens Falls 35, Lansingburgh 21.

Schuylerville 28, Greenwich 0.

Shaker 33, Shenendehowa 10.

Watervliet 41, Cohoes 8.

News & notes

The Tri-City ValleyCats snapped a six game losing streak in beating Down East, 9-2, Tuesday night. The teams will play a matinee this morning, starting at 11 am.

In order to make the playoffs, the 'Cats would have to do all but run the table in the season's final  month.

Torrential rains have forced postponement of what would've been the 1st Wednesday card at Saratoga race course. They'll be back at it tomorrow.

Staying in the Spa City, Saratoga High is merging with three Foothills Council schools---Queensbury, South Glens Falls, & Hudson Falls, to form Northern Peaks for women's wresting, starting in December.

Former Siena men's lacrosse coach Liam Gleason, who passed away last year, is being honored by his alma mater at UAlbany, entering their Hall of Fame.

The NY Knockout captured the American Women's Football League title over the weekend, defeating Carolina, 19-8, in San Antonio. Congratulations to the ladies. Now, local fans are hoping the Albany Firebirds can rebound after losing three of their last 4 to retain the AF1 title when playoff action starts this weekend.

Section II athletes on the move

In recent days, we've seen four Section II athletes make college commitments, one of which is surprisingly early.

That would be Stillwater lineman James Cocozzo, son of former NFL lineman Joe Cocozzo (Chargers), who is foregoing his senior season at Stillwater to play for Greg Schiano at Rutgers. It is not common for players to give up their senior seasons in high school, so we figure James may already have enough credits to graduate next year, if he hasn't already done so.

Staying in the Wasaren League for a moment, Saratoga Catholic reliever Luke Dejnozka, who will begin his senior season in the fall, has committed to Binghamton, and will pitch for the Bearcats beginning in 2028.

On the women's side, Payton Galuski, who has played both men's & women's soccer at Waterford, has committed to Penn State. I don't know if the Nittany Lions will see her as the next Clare Hutton, but who knows?

Finally, Mohonasen's Ella Mullin has committed to playing soccer at Wisconsin.

Best of luck to all four.

News & notes

It was Camp Day at Bruno Stadium Wednesday. WNYT's Chris Onorato brought the crew from their new morning yack-fest, Capital Region Lifestyle, to do a feature piece.

Unfortunately for WNYT & the campers, the ValleyCats offense wasn't exactly at peak form.

With Camp Day extended to a doubleheader due to a Tuesday rainout, the 'Cats were swept by Ottawa by a combined total of 26-5. OUCH!

The teams will conclude the series tonight.

It wasn't so long ago that Irad Ortiz, Jr. had come off the suspended list at Saratoga.

Now, his brother, Jose, gets sat down for today's card due to a violation with his riding crop. Jose shares the lead in the jockeys' race with Flavian Prat with 19 each going into today's card, which begins at 1:10 pm.

There was a barn fire at the Old Spa on Tuesday, but this time, no horses were killed, unlike the fire that struck the harness track last month. Officials are still investigating at press time.

As we've been checking on Arbiter the last couple of weeks, they have Jeff Sitterly, who has been an assistant to Paul Reinisch the last few years, listed as athletic director. Nothing has been written about Reinisch, who has been at Troy the last 20-odd years, leaving. Hmmmmmmmm.

News & notes

It's becoming a trend, with pro athletes in other sports moonlighting as horsemen, owning racehorses.

The first example is former Philadelphia & Washington star Jayson Werth, whose horse, Magic Chuck, named for his manager with the Phillies, Charlie Manuel, was euthanized over the weekend after a training injury.

The latest is Shen grad Kevin Huerter of the Detroit Pistons. Huerter looked so dapper Saturday, as a horse has a share of, The Good Life, upset first time starter Powerline in the 1st race under jockey Manuel Franco.

On the same card, hometown star Dylan Davis scored with Shape Note in the 4th race. Sister Katie finally found the winners' circle in Sunday's 3rd race with Big Brooklyn. Dylan came back three races later to win with Braums Run, then made it two in a row with Silvology in the 7th.

Racing resumes Thursday.

The season is over for the Carolina Blaze.

After Monday's game vs. Oklahoma City was suspended by rain with the Blaze already up by double digits, they resumed play earlier today, and the Blaze won via mercy rule, 11-1, in 5 innings. Ana Gold went 0-2 with a walk. There's always next year.

News & notes

If you believe WWE's math, they drew more people to MVP Arena, 7300 and change in this case, for last night's Smackdown broadcast on USA Network. This morning, the wrestlers are headed back to New York for the 2nd half of Fanatics Fest.

Siena normally averages anywhere from four to six thousand fans for home games at the arena.

Adam Pearce, former NWA champ and current Monday Night Raw general manager, was filling in for his Smackdown counterpart, and another former NWA champion, Nick Aldis, for the 2nd time in 3 weeks.

Check the highlight reel:

Saturday Night's Main Event, emanating from Madison Square Garden, and referenced frequently in the above video, takes place tonight (Peacock, 8 pm).

Irad Ortiz, Jr. has wasted little time reestablishing himself as the top dog in the jockeys' room at Saratoga.

Ortiz had 4 winners on Friday's card, brother Jose had 2, on the 10 race card. Most of today's card will air on FS1 in addition to OTB-TV.

The Tri-City ValleyCats, back from the All Star break, split a doubleheader with Quebec, winning the opener, 9-0, then dropping the nightcap, 7-5. Aaron Whitley (Niskayuna) batted 9th in game one, then was elevated to 3rd in the 2nd game, and finished with a 1-7 ledger with 2 runs scored.

Friday, July 17, 2026

News & notes

Manuel Franco had a riding triple Thursday at Saratoga as racing resumes, beginning week 3 of the summer meet. First post today is 1:10 pm.

If you can't afford a ticket for tonight's Friday Night Smackdown card at MVP Arena, take comfort in knowing it'll air on USA Network starting at 8 pm.

The next Mets game to air on WTEN will be Sunday at 1:30 at Philadelphia. WXXA has the finals of the World Cup at 3 pm.

The Carolina Blaze were officially eliminated from the AUSL playoffs Thursday, losing to Chicago, 15-7. Ana Gold (Ballston Spa/Duke) snapped out of a slump with a 2 run homer, but it just wasn't enough.

The Bandits won the game via mercy rule in 6 innings. As we've outlined before, the mercy rule's a little different than it is at the high school level, where a team up by 8, instead of 10 or more, runs can close out a game early.

News & notes

Riley Mulvey (Albany Academy/Siena) is turning pro, but not here in the US just yet.

Mulvey has signed with BKM Lucenec in the Slovak Basketball League. No word on when their season starts.

Saratoga's Ben Coryea will stay in the 518 to play college football.

Coryea has signed on as a walk-on with UAlbany after a standout senior season with the Blue Streaks. We'll be keeping an eye on him during the fall.

It doesn't look as though the Carolina Blaze will reach the AUSL playoffs, which start next week.

The Blaze dropped a heartbreaker, 7-6, to Chicago on Wednesday night, their 7th straight loss, which all but eliminates them from the postseason. Ana Gold (Ballston Spa/Duke) is continuing to struggle, going 0-4 on the night, as the game went 8 innings.

Game 2 is tonight at 7 pm on CBS Sports Network.

News & notes

As it is the All-Star Break in the majors, so it also is in the Frontier League.

The Tri-City ValleyCats are idle until after the break, but closed out the first half with a flourish, as they salvaged the finale of their series at Ottawa, 12-10, on Sunday afternoon. On Friday, the 'Cats return to Canada for a series vs. Quebec before returning home for a rematch with the Titans next week.

At least Tri-City will be represented at tomorrow's All Star Game with David Glancy & Dylan Broderick playing for Team Atlantic.

The 2016 MLB draft has come & gone, and two former Section II standouts are heading off to start their pro careers.

Ryan Bilka (CBA) was drafted by the Cleveland Guardians out of Miami, while Gavin Van Kempen (Maple Hill) was chosen by the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers out of East Carolina.

Now, if only the Albany Times-Union would go back to tracking the minor league journeys of these local kids........

With a week to go before the playoffs, Ana Gold and the Carolina Blaze are in danger of missing the postseason.

Carolina has dropped six in a row after getting swept by Texas, 8-0, in 5 innings Monday. Gold was 0-2, as her slump continues. Fortunately for the Blaze, they'll close the season at home, as they'll start a 5 game tomorrow vs. Chicago, streaming on MLB.TV. The finale of that 2-set will be Thursday on CBS Sports Network at 7 pm. After that, they'll finish with Oklahoma City (Saturday at 4 pm, Sunday at noon, and Monday at 7, all on ESPN or ESPN2.). Carolina needs to run the table to get back into playoff contention, as they're currently in 5th place, 5 1/2 games out of first. Utah has locked down the regular season title, meaning the best the Blaze can hope for is to finish 2nd or 3rd.

Saturday, July 11, 2026

News & notes

The Carolina Blaze dropped a heartbreaker to the Texas Volts, 1-0, in 8 innings Friday. Ana Gold went 1-2, starting as the "designated player" before taking the field at 3rd base late in the game. The teams finish the two game series today at 2 pm on ESPN.

The good news for the Tri-City ValleyCats is that they got a game in under three hours Friday at Ottawa. The bad news, of course, is that the Titans defeated Tri-City, 4-2.

Ranko Stevanovic homered for the 'Cats. The team's website might've been joking when they suggested Stevanovic has a future as a meteorologist for WRGB, probably after a guest appearance recently.

Kinnon LaRose might not have been a headline player at Siena, but he's looking to make inroads as a trainer at Saratoga.

LaRose debuts today with three horses entered at Saratoga, including in the first two races.

The jockeys' room will be a little fuller today as Irad Ortiz, Jr. and a few others return from suspension.

Jose Ortiz, Irad's brother, had another riding triple on Friday. Dylan Davis had two mounts finish in the money on the card. Today's 11 race card begins at 12:35 pm.

The Albany Firebirds close the regular season tonight at MVP Arena vs. Nashville (Vice, 6 pm), hoping to win by 10 points or better to reclaim the top seed. Sam Castronova returns after missing last week's win at Beaumont due to a death in the family. Too bad the 'Birds don't have a radio deal.......

Friday, July 10, 2026

News & notes

Just when you thought the Tri-City ValleyCats had things going their way, making a run toward the playoffs, their pitching regressed the last two nights.

The ValleyCats have given up 29 runs in their last two games, both losses to Three Rivers, the latest a 16-5 drubbing on Thursday. The Eagles scored 9 runs in the final two innings to put the game away, offsetting two homers by Brayden Jobert, who took over the team lead in homers from David Glancy.

Glancy, oh, by the way, has been added to the Atlantic Conference All-Star team for Wednesday's game in Florence, Kentucky, joining Dylan Broderick.

Tri-City begins a long road trip in Ottawa tonight, and will return to The Joe on July 21.

Mets fans will need to have access to Apple TV in order to watch tonight's game vs. Boston. First pitch is at 7:15 pm. If you can access their radio feed on Audacy (via the former WCBS AM in NYC), you'll be all set.

One week ago, it was a comforting story to read that Paco Lopez had recovered from a spill to win the feature race at Saratoga.

But, fate can be oh so cruel.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Lopez has been hit with a 30 days suspension for gross careless riding. Fellow jockey Javier Castellano will be sidelined for an additional three weeks, as he recovers from his injuries.

Current riding leader Jose Ortiz had another three win day on Thursday. Hometown star Dylan Davis picked up his 2nd winner with the Irish bred After Taxes in Thursday's 9th race.

Today's 10 race card begins at 1:10 pm.

Schedule subject to change due to weather and/or other concerns.

News & notes

Bethlehem product Matt Quatraro had to be reaching for the Rolaids Tuesday night at Citi Field.

With the Kansas City Royals in town to face the Mets, Quatraro watched as his club scored 11 unanswered runs in the middle innings, and hold on to beat the Mets, 16-12. The teams continue the series tonight with a first pitch scheduled for 7:10 pm (SNY).

The crew of the USS Marionette were special guests of the Tri-City ValleyCats Tuesday, and were treated to plenty of offensive fireworks as the 'Cats defeated Three Rivers, 8-6. Dylan Broderick hit two homers for the 'Cats, while RJ Stinson & Bryden Jobert each went yard for Tri-City.

Unfortunately, the attendance was below 2000 fans for the 2nd straight home date. The series continues tonight at 6:30 pm.

The Colonial Council has struck a deal with Arbiter to host the league's website. Later today, we'll post the Troy High fall schedule, sans football, with LaSalle to follow later this week.

The Portland Cascade gained a measure of revenge against the Carolina Blaze, defeating the Blaze, 4-2, on Tuesday. The only scoring for Carolina came on a 2 run inside the park homer by Ana Gold, who was dropped to 7th in the batting order. Gold went 1-2 with a walk and the homer in the game. Game 2 is tonight at 8 on CBS Sports Network.

You'll have to wait an extra day before racing resumes at Saratoga. The NYRA website notes, in small print, that action will resume tomorrow. Not sure if that's going to be the case for the balance of the meet.

News & notes

We are learning that Columbia High had players not only from their football team, but other teams as well, at a party in East Greenbush on ...
