 Bethlehem product Matt Quatraro had to be reaching for the Rolaids Tuesday night at Citi Field.

With the Kansas City Royals in town to face the Mets, Quatraro watched as his club scored 11 unanswered runs in the middle innings, and hold on to beat the Mets, 16-12. The teams continue the series tonight with a first pitch scheduled for 7:10 pm (SNY).

The crew of the USS Marionette were special guests of the Tri-City ValleyCats Tuesday, and were treated to plenty of offensive fireworks as the 'Cats defeated Three Rivers, 8-6. Dylan Broderick hit two homers for the 'Cats, while RJ Stinson & Bryden Jobert each went yard for Tri-City.

Unfortunately, the attendance was below 2000 fans for the 2nd straight home date. The series continues tonight at 6:30 pm.

The Colonial Council has struck a deal with Arbiter to host the league's website. Later today, we'll post the Troy High fall schedule, sans football, with LaSalle to follow later this week.

The Portland Cascade gained a measure of revenge against the Carolina Blaze, defeating the Blaze, 4-2, on Tuesday. The only scoring for Carolina came on a 2 run inside the park homer by Ana Gold, who was dropped to 7th in the batting order. Gold went 1-2 with a walk and the homer in the game. Game 2 is tonight at 8 on CBS Sports Network.

You'll have to wait an extra day before racing resumes at Saratoga. The NYRA website notes, in small print, that action will resume tomorrow. Not sure if that's going to be the case for the balance of the meet.

News & notes

 After getting swept in embarrassing fashion by the Chicago Cubs, the Mets return to WTEN tonight, hoping to extract some payback from the Philadelphia Phillies. First pitch is at 7:10 pm.

Speaking of getting swept, the Tri-City ValleyCats were swept by the NY Boulders the last three nights.

Thursday's game was cut short due to rain, with the Boulders picking up a 7-2 win. Tri-City opens a series tonight vs. the Schaumburg Boomers at 6:30 pm.

CBA's multi-sport star, JT Vogel, has committed to Princeton, per the Albany Times-Union, prior to starting his senior season with the Brothers. Vogel starred for CBA in basketball as well as football the last couple of years.

Shaker is losing another piece of their Class AAA women's basketball title team.

Malia Jackson is going the prep school route, transferring to the Darrow School this fall. Best of luck to Malia.

The Albany Times-Union released their softball all-star teams on Thursday, and, aside from the predictable pandering to the Suburban Council, Troy High got dissed again.

Junior Kaylee Kussler & sophomore Gabby Hansen were named to the 2nd team.

Bottom line, the system needs to change. Yesterday.

 Troy High was planning an exhibition soccer tournament for Thursday to commemorate the start of the 2026 World Cup tournament. However, the tournament was postponed in anticipation of inclement weather that didn't come until much later. It's been rescheduled for June 24, with a 1:30 start at Picken Field.

The Tri-City ValleyCats return home tonight for a series vs. the NY Boulders, weather permitting, at 6:30 pm, after the 'Cats fell to Three Rivers, 11-10, on Thursday night, snapping a 3 game winning streak. Jake Reinisch (Shen/Wake Forest) & Amani Larry homered for the 'Cats.

It was not a good day for Section II at SUNY Cortland on Thursday, as all 4 men's lacrosse teams were eliminated in the state semi-finals.'

 The Tri-City ValleyCats scored 5 runs in the 5th inning, leading to a 10-6 win over Three Rivers on Tuesday night. The teams will meet again tonight, just before 7 pm.

While Section II lacrosse, softball, & baseball teams will vie for state titles starting tomorrow, a state title was claimed in golf.

Hayden Knapp, a sophomore at South Glens Falls, finished at -2 to win the individual championship on Monday.

The closest Section II player behind Knapp was Maria Glavin of LaSalle, who finished 9th at +8.

On the men's side, Francisco Cupp of Saratoga was the highest finisher for Section II, placing 4th at -2 behind Ryan Liu of Manhasset (Section 8). Tanner LaTorre (Ichabod Crane) finished at +9 in a tie for 25th place. Troy's Joey Degnan was in a tie for 27th at +10.

Renovations have been completed on the tennis courts at Central Park in Schenectady, which explains why this year's men's tennis sectional finals were held on neutral campuses. The Section II finals figure to be back in Schenectady next year. The Schenectady City Council, however, is tabling the idea of pay-for-play fees, which., reportedly, are rarely enforced. Why bother with them, then, and open the courts to the public?

So they brought back the Uncle Sam baseball tournament. Let's not wait another 10 years for it to return

 I just don't get the seeming lack of interest in making the Uncle Sam baseball tournament an annual thing.

The 2026 edition, played May 15 & 17 at Lansingburgh High, and won by LaSalle, should signal the start of an annual tradition. This year, Tamarac, based in the Cropseyville suburb, replaced Catholic Central as the 4th team representing the city, along with Troy High.

By this time next year, Catholic Central will be just an elementary school in Latham, with the high schoolers moving to Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in Schenectady, having already ended decades old sports rivalries with the other city schools, so Tamarac would make a perfect substitute.

But, then, there is a question of whether or not Lansingburgh would host the tournament every year. 'Burgh has hosted the last two, the 2017 edition being played next door at Knickerbacker Park. LaSalle plays most of their home games at Geer Field, home of South Troy Little League, and as such, wouldn't be suitable for the tournament. They try to play at least one home game a year at Bruno Stadium, weather permitting, but the tournament would have to be scheduled prior to the start of the Tri-City ValleyCats season, since they host the Section II baseball semi-finals & finals, as was the case two weeks ago. Troy, like 'Burgh, has a turf field in their sports complex on Burdett Avenue, and added a couple of electronic scoreboards in the last decade. The only thing missing would be a secondary PA system on that side of the complex.

The easy solution would be to work out a deal with the 'Cats and Hudson Valley Community College to schedule the tournament the weekend before the 'Cats begin their home schedule.

But, in this era of equality, what about a Uncle Sam softball tournament? Troy, 'Burgh, LaSalle, & Emma Willard would be the four teams. Lansingburgh hosted the Section II softball championships for the first time this year, with Troy hosting the Class A semi-finals. Emma Willard, like Tamarac, would represent the Wasaren League, while the others are in the Colonial Council.

In this case, the four schools could rotate hosting the tournament, given Emma Willard's close proximity to Troy High. Weather, of course, would be a factor, though this year's tournaments were not affected by weather all that much, surprisingly.

Something to think about.

 They are just underway at Bruno Stadium this morning, as the Tri-City ValleyCats will try to win the series vs. Sussex County after losing, 17-9, in a nearly 4 hour marathon on Wednesday.

While the Frontier League uses a pitch clock, like everyone else, the pace of play is still an issue, though you can chalk up yesterday to the 26 runs scored between the two teams on a hot June morning. The league doesn't have the ABS system, either, but maybe that'll be added down the road.

Troy High's Julian Monk has qualified for state regionals in track, and will compete on Saturday after winning his race on Wednesday afternoon.

NEPSAC has claimed some more Section II basketball players.

The Albany Times-Union reports today that Shaker's Giada & Sofia Lanni will play for former Catholic Central star Julie McBride at the Hoosac School in Hoosick Falls next season. The sisters have been reclassified as juniors for next season, meaning they will be part of the Class of 2028. On the men's side, Marcelin Mukendi, has also reclassified as he transfers to the CATS Academy in Boston for next season. He, too, will graduate in 2028. The Lannis are spending the summer playing AAU ball with the NY Havoc, with soon-to-be-ex-teammates Malia Jackson & Jayla Geter.

Chatham 9, Saranac 2. The Panthers await the winner of today's game between Canton & Marcellus, and will host that game Saturday at Lansingburgh, with a 2 pm start. The A game between Averill Park & New Hartford starts at 12 noon.

Curiously, Windham-Ashland-Jewett, based in Greene County, doesn't play in Section II, but they, too, have qualified, playing in Class D, and will play Chapel Field today at 1:30 at Monroe-Woodbury. In case you wonder, ye scribe has kin in Greene County.

We're keeping a close eye on the Belmont Stakes Festival at Saratoga, running through Sunday. Dylan Davis (Saratoga) didn't win any races on Wednesday, but had three mounts finish in the money (2 2nd's & a 3rd). He has 5 mounts on today's 11 race card, while sister Katherine has 2.

With the NBA finals on ABC tomorrow, the Mets-Padres game will air on WXXA, with a 9:40 pm first pitch. It'll be the first WPIX feed on Fox23 since the pre-season, as the Mets have already had a national game on Fox last month.

 Shenendehowa didn't have to look far to find their next men's basketball coach. Just an old foe.

Andrew Platek, who starred for Guilderland, and whose college resume includes stops at North Carolina & Siena, and most recently was an assistant at Niskayuna, was hired today to succeed Paul Yattaw, who stepped down after the season ended in March. Platek, I believe, will be the youngest coach in the Suburban Council when play starts this winter.

The Tri-City ValleyCats dropped another one on Monday, a rare Monday, in fact, 6-3, to Mississippi to start a 6 game series. The 'Cats welcomed back Wes Albert from the inactive list, but he has yet to pick up a win this season. Albert was credited with three innings pitched, and saw his record drop to 0-3. Game 2 is tomorrow at 12 noon.

 The Tri-City ValleyCats were rained out Saturday vs. Brockton. The teams will play today at 5 pm, but last night's rainout will be made up as part of a doubleheader when the Rox return to Troy July 3-5.

Update: Tonight's game has also been postponed, and will be made up at a later date.

The first sectional finals are now set in Section II baseball.

The AAA semifinals Friday & Saturday saw Saratoga sweep Shaker, and Colonie do likewise with Albany, at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam. The Wolfpack & Blue Streaks will meet at Bruno Stadium starting Friday at 7 pm.

Troy shut out Ballston Spa on Tuesday to reach the Class B title game, then took Columbia to double overtime before falling short of the title, 12-6.

Robbed of a home game due to politics, Sean Geisel's club couldn't hold a lead vs. Queensbury on Thursday, losing, 7-1.

Queensbury ended the historic 1st varsity season for the Troy women, 24-3, on Wednesday. Nothing will take away the significance of this year's efforts.

Men's lacrosse:

Zach Gill's first season ended this afternoon as the Flying Horses fell to Niskayuna, 22-3, after downing Amsterdam at home on Wednesday.

Baseball:

Current record: 8-12.

 The last of Section II's tennis titles was decided Thursday, when Bethlehem upset Shaker, 7-2, to win the Class AA title. Now, it's on to state play for the Eagles.

The former Green Tech star, who played as a graduate student at the Knox School this season, is returning home to play for Dwayne Killings at UAlbany next season. The Great Danes can use the hometown connection, to be sure.

Brayhans Barreto didn't have it Friday as the Tri-City ValleyCats opened a series vs. Brockton at Bruno Stadium.

After 5 innings of no-hit ball vs. Quebec a week ago, Barreto was wild over three innings vs. The Rox, who touched him up for 8 runs, all earned over that span. Derek Bender (Albany Academy/Coastal Carolina) got it started after Barreto walked the bases loaded, and crushed a grand slam to right. Tommy Kretzler (Colonie) walked with 1 out, but was doubled off first on a Scott Seeker liner to first baseman Brayden Jobert to end the frame.

After Brockton doubled its lead to 8-0 in the 3rd, Tri-City finally answered with 4 runs of their own, and gradually began to claw their way back into the game against Zach Eldred (Columbia/SUNY Brockport). Ranko Stevanovic homered in the 5th to cut the deficit to 8-6, and in the 6th, Jobert scored on a single by Jake Reinisch (Shenendehowa/Wake Forest). However, the Rox put the game away in the 7th against Michael Riley with three insurance runs. Jobert drove in Connor Hext in the home 7th to close the scoring, as the Rox won, 11-8.

The teams will try to resume the series tonight at 6:30 pm, weather permitting.

 UAlbany women's lacrosse has taken a huge hit after its season ended earlier this month, according to the Albany Times-Union.

14 players, including the 6 who missed the NCAA tournament game, have entered the transfer portal. Ouch. Talk about needing to rebuild.

Yeah, this transfer portal thing is out of control.

Former Duanesburg star Allison O'Hanlon never played a minute at Siena due to injury, but she's poised to make a comeback at the Division II level at Daemon, according to media reports. We'll see if the comeback tour makes it to the 518 next season.

The Tri-City ValleyCats still haven't won a series this season. 

The 'Cats dropped a 4-2 decision to Three Rivers on Thursday afternoon. With starter Stephen Still gone (Baltimore), I've a suspicion that, in due time, Arlo Marynczak (Bethlehem/Siena), currently in the bullpen, could move back into the rotation. The 'Cats open a series with Brockton tonight at 6:30.

 The Tri-City ValleyCats welcomed back Jake Reinisch (Shen/Wake Forest), who made an immediate impact offensively, and said goodbye to pitcher Stephen Still, whose contract was transferred to the Baltimore Orioles.

 Welp, the silly season is officially here with baseball & softball sectionals. For softball, the road leads not to Luther Forest in Malta, but somewhere closer to home for most teams this year. For baseball, it's, of course, Joe Bruno Stadium.

South Glens Falls @ Burnt Hills. The defending champions are a #4 seed, but have played one fewer game than the Bulldogs, who are at 16-4. See a pattern here, pilgrims?

Ballston Spa @ Bethlehem. I don't think all of Bethlehem's games have been reported. If they have, they have the fewest wins of a #2 seed in the field.

Let's stop for a moment. The seeds are mostly wrong, just like in volleyball. Strength of schedule, again, is the excuse, but it's not valid. Here's how the seeds should be:

6. Ballston Spa.

News & notes

 The Albany Firebirds are still undefeated in AF1, but this was the closest call of the season. Albany escaped with a 60-57 win over Michigan on Saturday, surviving a last second replay challenge over what the hosts thought was an illegal defense, but wasn't. The 'Birds return home May 30 at MVP Arena, as they have this week off.

Troy High's unified basketball team has reached the semi-finals of a tournament, with the game to be played at MVP Arena on Wednesday. Start time not yet announced. As previously noted, the unified teams are working with Special Olympics. MVP Arena's website has no information at press time on teams, times, or dates.

Another night, another loss for the Tri-City ValleyCats as they were swept by Quebec, 4-1, on Sunday. The losing streak has reached 5 in a row, and with Three Rivers coming in on Tuesday, the 'Cats will need some help, fast.

A couple of quick notes. As we've seen, Arlo Marynczak (Bethlehem/Siena) is working out of the bullpen as a relief pitcher so far this season, as he recovers from a late season injury from last year. Jake Reinisch (Shenendehowa/Wake Forest) is on the IL, but could be back for either Three Rivers or Brockton this week. Despite a standout performance on Friday, Aaron Whitley (Niskayuna) sat out Saturday's game, when the 'Cats could have used him late, as they did with Amani Larry. Those type of in-game decisions have Carlos Mendoza on the hot seat with the Mets, and the same fate could await Tri-City manager Greg Tagert if things do not improve.

 Sectionals begin this coming week, weather permitting. The women's teams have the momentum. The guys? Well...........!

Softball:

Final regular season record: 15-4 (12-1 Colonial Council).

Sean Geisel's club sent a very strong message to the rest of Section 2 over the last 48 hours. Three games, three mercy rule wins, all shutouts. Mohonasen, Holy Names, & Lansingburgh fell by a combined total of 46-0 over the last 48 hours. Ouch, babe! And Troy started the week by clipping 'Burgh, 3-2.

Next: Sectional pairings will be announced Monday. Troy will scrimmage Averill Park, weather permitting, on Tuesday, before their first sectional game.

Flag football:

Final regular season record: 10-2.

Albany Leadership was roadkill on Monday, to the tune of 64-12. Even the Times-Union's Kyra Santicola has jumped on the Troy bandwagon.

Next: The Lady Horses would love to send coach Frank Rogers off to Union College with a sectional title. The first step comes Tuesday against the winner of tonight's game between Burnt Hills & Ballston Spa.

Women's lacrosse:

Final regular season record: 10-6.

In a word, history. 43 seasons of lacrosse at Troy High, and the women are the 1st ones to finish with a winning record, punctuating the feat with a 15-3 thumping of Albany in Wednesday's season finale.

Next: It's off to the North Country, with a 5 game winning streak on the line, vs. Queensbury, which has lost 7 in a row, and 8 of their last 9, Tuesday afternoon.

Men's lacrosse:

Final regular season record: 4-10.

Zach Gill's club defeated Mohonasen-Schalmont-Schenectady, but dropped their Senior Night finale in a tight one to Voorheesville.

Trevor McCarthy's club defeated Lansingburgh & Mohonasen, but were mercy ruled by LaSalle on Friday in the first round of the Uncle Sam tournament.

News & notes

 If it sounded like you were at the wrestling matches instead of Bruno Stadium for the Tri-City ValleyCats' home opener vs. Quebec, there's a good reason for that.

Brian Cady is back.

Cady was MIA during the Section II basketball sectionals at HVCC, but there was no mistaking his voice issuing from the PA booth at The Joe. The "Round Mound of Sound" has been the PA voice of the 'Cats for a bit, but last night was more pronounced than usual to get the fans fired up.

On to the game.

1st pitch was delayed to 6:42 pm due to the opening night intros of both teams. It's an annual thing that you get used to. Quebec drew first blood in the 3rd with 2 outs. Arturo DeFreitas drew a walk, and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch by Tri-City starter Austin Dill. David "Bend it like" Mendham then deposited a 2 run homer over the left field fence to give the Capitales a 2-0 lead. Quebec added a run in the 3rd on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Halopian.

Quebec starter Francis Ferguson held the 'Cats scoreless through 5 innings. In the 6th, reliever Halley Gollert gave up a solo homer to "Well dressed" Amani Larry to get Tri-City on the board. In the 7th, with Aaron Whitley (Niskayuna) on board, David Glancy launched a 2 run homer, after the Capitales had scored in the top half, to get within a run at 4-3.

Tri-City had a chance to win it in the 9th after Arlo Marynczak (Bethlehem) held the Capitales scoreless in the top half of the frame. But, with 2 outs, Cooper Morgan got Larry to fly out to center to seal the win for Quebec, sending the 'Cats to their 3rd straight loss.

Game two will start on time tonight at 6:30.

The Uncle Sam baseball tournament has indeed returned as well, with day 1 taking place Friday at Lansingburgh. The hosts blew away Tamarac, 14-2, in 5 innings, and LaSalle did the same to Troy High, 11-1, also in 5. The Knights & Cadets meet again tomorrow at 12:30 pm., with the Bengals & Flying Horses playing the consolation game, presumably at 10 am.

Back to the ValleyCats for a moment. Apparently, they couldn't find any black or brown foam to create a replica head for Albany Mayor Dorcey Applyrs, so they instead went to the vaults for a Jerry Jennings head for the Mayor's Race in the middle of the 6th inning. Had a feeling something like this would happen. We'll look further into it.

 Saratoga took the unusual step of forfeiting their 1st round flag football playoff to Schenectady on Thursday due to scheduling conflicts surrounding their annual senior prom, which is, I guess, coming up on Saturday, when the Lady Streaks would've had a quarterfinal round game to play had they played & won on Thursday.

So now, the Lady Patriots advance to play top seeded Shaker in the Class A quarters tomorrow night at 6:30 pm.

The Tri-City ValleyCats lost their 2nd straight series, and were blown out for the 2nd day in a row by Sussex County, 15-7, on Thursday afternoon. Thus, the 'Cats come home with a 2-4 record as they host Quebec beginning tonight. First pitch is set for 6:30, though player introductions might delay the start of the game.

You'll need either a radio or your computer to listen to or watch game 1 of the 2026 Subway Series between the Mets & Yankees tonight. The game will stream nationally on Apple TV, with first pitch at 7:10 pm, and can be heard on WTMM (104.5 FM) with Dave Sims & Suzyn Waldman. The other option is to pick up the Mets radio broadcast from NYC on Audacy.
