News & notes

After getting on the soapbox yesterday to stump for the ol' alma mater (Troy High), Wednesday's results brought a sobering dose of reality.

Troy softball saw their 7 game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Ichabod Crane, 14-3, leaving the Lady Riders as the only undefeated team left in the Colonial Council. Troy drops to 6-1 in league play, 8-3 overall. The Lady Horses will play host to Albany Academy tomorrow.

Baseball will also host Academy after beating Ichabod Crane, 7-0, to snap a 2 game losing streak. Keegan Armstrong twirled a no-hitter, and struck out 13 to lead Troy.

Flag football just rolls on, blowing out Ravena, 33-6, for their 7th straight win. Next up is a road trip to Mohonasen tomorrow, followed by a showdown with Columbia on Monday.

Men's lacrosse dropped an 8-7 decision to Greenwich-Cambridge. Next up is a road game at Hoosick Falls-Tamarac tomorrow. The Panthers will be looking for revenge after losing to Troy earlier this season.

Niskayuna is looking for a new football coach.

Brian Grasdorf stepped down after leading Nisky to a Section 2 class A title in November. Grasdorf, the head man for Nisky for 9 seasons, is leaving to spend more time with his family.

Burnt Hills is planning on a new multi-purpose field for football, soccer, field hockey, & lacrosse, to be built next door to the current field, Centennial Field. It'll be a turf field, which would cut down on concerns about rain.

It won't take long for Gerry McNamara to see some "old friends" next season.

It was announced today that UAlbany will take a road trip to Syracuse as part of both schools' non-conference schedules, per the Albany Times-Union. Date has not been finalized as of press time.

This season, the Orange began a series of ads with Harding Mazzotti law firm. Imagine if ex-Siena players Francis Folefac and Gavin Doty appear in those ads next season.

We have to close on a somber note. I'd imagine flags at UAlbany are at half staff today in memory for Richard "Doc" Sauers, who passed away earlier this week at 96. If it was possible for the school to memorialize Sauers next season, I don't think anyone would object.

Rest in peace, "Doc".

Here we go again: Troy High gets dissed by the Times-Union

Each week, the Albany Times-Union releases its weekly rankings of the top teams in Section II in baseball, softball, lacrosse, & flag football. You would think Troy High would be among the tops in softball as well as flag football.

Nope.

The baseball & softball rankings were released online on Monday, and appeared in Tuesday's print editions. Lacrosse is in today's print editions, and flag football tomorrow.

Of the four sports, Troy only appears in the flag football rankings.

At number 5.

Like, seriously?

Entering play today at home vs. Ravena, the Lady Horses have won six in a row, and their path to the top is blocked by teams from-----wait for it----the Suburban Council. The political bias couldn't be more obvious. Troy beat Niskayuna on Monday, 27-12, for their sixth straight win. The excuses are obvious. The strength of schedule argument comes into play, considering that Troy blew out Lansingburgh and KIPP Tech Valley, both 1st year programs in flag football, and their lone loss was a 1 point heartbreaker to Holy Trinity.

Through 8 games, the Lady Horses have outscored their opponents, 310-66, averaging just over 8 points allowed per game, while averaging just shy of 40 points a game. Those are numbers more closely associated with the men in tackle football.

As of press time, Tuesday's women's lacrosse match at Albany Academy hadn't been reported. Both teams went into the game at 4-3. Neither made the rankings. We're hoping there's something in the paper tomorrow.

Softball has won seven in a row going into today's game at Ichabod Crane, easily the class of the Colonial Council after blowing away Mohonasen last Friday. Again, strength of schedule is an argument keeping Sean Geisel's ladies out of the top 5. Their only losses were to Suburban Council contenders Colonie & Averill Park. Troy & Mohon are the only Class AA teams in the Colonial, and both are getting the Rodney Dangerfield treatment.

We have no argument for the men's lacrosse & baseball teams, as they've been struggling this season. Their poor records justify their absence from the rankings. In what has been a phenomenal season for the women at Troy, it is political bias, regardless of what they say to the contrary, just like in volleyball during the fall.

To Michael Kelly and the sports staff at the Times-Union, I say this. Do better.

News & notes

While Albany Academy alum Kennedy Swedick has finished her sophomore season for Virginia, another prodigy is developing in the 518.

Mario Vilardi is just 10. His father began taking him golfing when Mario was 5, and, earlier this month, Vilardi finished 2nd in the Putt, Drive, & Chip event preceding the Masters in Augusta. I think we'll be seeing more of Mario down the road.

Troy High sports review, through April 24

As we approach the end of April, there are a couple of hot teams that should stay hot going forward.

Flag football:

Current record: 6-1.

The Lady Horses have won 5 in a row. Hudson was the latest victim, losing 31-6 at home to Troy on Friday.

Consider this for a moment. Troy has outscored their opponents by a ridiculous margin of 283-54. Ouch, babe!! This averages out to Troy averaging 40+ points a game through 7 games while allowing an average of just under 8 points a game. If this sounds familiar, well, we've seen the men's tackle football teams be just as dominant over the years.

Next: The road trip continues at Niskayuna on Monday, before returning home to play Ravena on Wednesday, followed by a road game at Mohonasen on Friday.

Softball:

Current record: 7-2 (5-0 Colonial Council).

Mohonasen was the latest victim on Friday, as the Lady Horses won by mercy rule yet again, to the tune of 18-0. Yipes! Wednesday's game vs. Lansingburgh has been pushed back to May 8. A game vs. Holy Names that was supposed to have taken place earlier this month at home has been shifted to a road game at the NYS Correctional Facility (?) on May 15.

Next: LaSalle comes in on Monday. After that, it's a road trip to Valatie to play Ichabod Crane on Wednesday before hosting Albany Academy on Friday. Three tough opponents stand in the way of a perfect league record.

Baseball:

Current record: 3-6.

After snapping a 3 game losing streak in clipping Lansingburgh on Wednesday, Trevor McCarthy's club dropped a 10-3 decision to Mohonasen on Friday.

Next: Same schedule as softball. Home vs. LaSalle, which has owned the Troy boys in recent years, and Albany Academy, on the road at Ichabod Crane, plus a road trip to Ballston Spa on Saturday.

Women's lacrosse:

Current record: 4-3.

The winning streak ended Friday with a 19-4 thumping at the hands of Voorheesville.

Next: The ladies stay on the road at Albany Academy on Tuesday before returning home to play Cohoes on Thursday. Then, back on the road for a rematch with Mohon/Schenectady/Schalmont on Friday.

Men's lacrosse:

Current record: 2-5.

Not a good week. From what we can gather, the laxmen fell to Voorheesville as well on Friday night.

Next: The road trip continues at Johnstown on Monday, then back home Wednesday night vs. Greenwich-Cambridge before a rematch with Hoosick Falls-Tamarac on Friday at Hoosick Falls.

News & notes

After winning a state title with CBA last month, JJ Osinski is changing schools and leagues.

Osinski, who will be a senior next season, is transferring to Albany Academy, now in NEPSAC. Brother Austin will stay at CBA, so the Brothers will be just fine.

Hudson Valley Community College is undefeated no more in baseball.

The Vikings split a doubleheader with Cayuga Community College Wednesday, losing the nightcap after extending their winning streak to 21 in a row in the opener. 24 hours later, HVCC swept Cayuga at Bruno Stadium. All four games went 7 innings except Thursday's opener, which went 5 due to the mercy rule.

I wonder if Cayuga plays the theme of native son Rod Serling's Twilight Zone at their ballpark........

Thursday's high school scores:

Women's lacrosse:

Guilderland 18, Ballston Spa 5.

Emma Willard 20, Voorheesville 4. The Jesters pick up their first win of the season.

LaSalle 10, Hoosick Falls-Tamarac 9.

Suffern 15, Burnt Hills 8.

Bethlehem 16, Columbia 5.

Johnstown 15, Academy of Holy Names 10.

Troy def. Mohonasen-Schalmont-Schenectady. Score has not been published as of press time. The Lady Horses have won 5 in a row.

Men's lacrosse:

Bethlehem 18, Columbia 3.

Niskayuna 17, Averill Park 5.

Glens Falls 15, Amsterdam 4.

South Glens Falls 22, Hudson Falls 0.

Burnt Hills 14, CBA 12.

Saratoga 11, Colonie 3.

Queensbury 10, Scotia 7.

Baseball:

Maple Hill 12, Berlin-New Lebanon 0 (5 innings).

Softball:

Amsterdam 14, Mayfield 2 (5 innings).

Ichabod Crane 14, Voorheesville 2 (5 innings).

Coxsackie-Athens 14, Catskill 6.

Chalk up another win for the NY Phoenix, as they defeated Reading, 111-105, at M & T Bank-Mohawk Harbor Arena on Thursday. The teams meet again Sunday at 3 at Mohawk Harbor.

A quick reminder that due to NFL draft coverage, tonight's Mets-Rockies game will be on WXXA (UFL football shifts to Grit for the night).

News & notes

A trio of former Section II basketball stars are back home to join the Albany City Rocks for a weekend series of games in Atlanta.

Tre'dell Faison & Devon Maloney (LaSalle) and Stetson Merritt (Troy) spent the season with different teams in NEPSAC. Merritt landed honorable mention status in Class AAA while playing for New Hampton in New Hampshire.

Siena's men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-6 decision to Merrimack on Wednesday to fall to 11-4 overall, 7-2 in the MAAC. The Saints allowed 5 goals in the 2nd quarter, and never fully recovered.

The most ignored team in local sports

Check the sports section of either the Albany Times-Union or Daily Gazette, and you'd be hard pressed to find anything on Hudson Valley Community College's sports teams. Any of them. El Cheapo Media might have something, but at last check, it usually takes them a few days to do a feature story.

Consider, for example, HVCC's baseball team, currently undefeated at 20-0 heading into a 2-day, 4-game home & home series with Cayuga Community College, starting tomorrow in Cayuga. Each team will host a doubleheader.

We bring this up because the Vikings will play an exhibition game on April 30 against the other tenants at Bruno Stadium, the Tri-City Valleycats. While this has been acknowledged on the 'Cats' website, it's not on the Vikings' schedule, which tells you all you need to know about a slight disconnect between the school and the 'Cats.

I've attended a game between these two clubs in the past, and, based on that experience, it's just sad that the Vikings have so much difficulty drawing fans. No pre-game advertising outside of the campus, if there's any on campus at all. Nothing in the papers. HVCC is 20-0, and ignored by the media. Why? Because unlike UAlbany, Siena, RPI, & Union, HVCC is a 2 year junior college. With the dwindling media resources, the Vikings get the Rodney Dangerfield treatment from the media, and an undefeated season shouldn't be swept under the rug at all.

This year's Vikings have a decided Section II vibe, in that of the 55 players on the roster, 16 of them come from Section II schools (i.e. LaSalle, Shaker, Ichabod Crane). Almost 1/3 of the roster. They're lucky if Bill Arsenault (Times-Union) can fit them into his Campus Watch column. WTEN did a feature piece on the Vikings over the weekend, so what's missing? Word of mouth. If there's not enough attendance at games, and the press isn't there, who's going to know what's going on?

The 2nd half of the Cayuga series is at Bruno Stadium on Thursday, beginning at 2 pm. Don't wait for the Valleycats to play the Vikings a week later. You'll be glad you made the trip.

News & notes

We thought Siena had lost its entire 2026 recruiting class with Gerry McNamara's departure for Syracuse last month.

We were wrong.

Parrish Edmond, Jr. recommitted to Siena Monday, and will play for new coach Nevada Smith. Oh, by the way, Smith is retaining just one assistant from McNamara's staff, and that is local legend Brian Beaury, formerly of the College of St. Rose.

Troy High's Tianna Harris made the Albany Times-Union honor roll in today's editions coming off a 5 TD performance vs. Ichabod Crane last Wednesday. Harris is also in the running to be the Player of The Week.

Scotia alum Karen Bertasso, 41, finished 5th in her age class at the Boston Marathon on Monday. Bertasso crossed the finish line around the 2 hour, 45 minute mark.

News & notes

Former Schalmont star Karissa Antoine is coming home.

After 2 seasons at Fordham, Antoine has gone through the transfer portal, and will play for Terry Primm and Siena next season. The Saints' basketball program, both men's & women's, can use the good news.

Meanwhile, Stillwater football standout James Cocozzo, son of former NFL lineman Joe Cocozzo, has committed to play college football for Greg Schiano at Rutgers, meaning we'll likely see the younger Cocozzo appear on the Big 10 Network's coverage.

State Senator Jim Tedisco is an old school Republican. In other words, he's actually doing things to help his constituents, rather than bend the knee to the current president.

To that end, Tedisco helped secure a state grant for $100,000 to build the new Deanna Marie Rivers Batting Cages as the Miss Shen softball fields in Clifton Commons in Clifton Park. Rivers, you'll recall, was killed in an accident a few years ago while attending Shenendehowa. Thank you, Senator.

Two games, two blowout wins for the Albany Firebirds.

Josh Kulka threw 8 touchdown passes, and the 'Birds blew away Beaumont, 55-27, on Saturday afternoon to start a 3 game road trip.

The NY Phoenix return to M & T Bank Mohawk Harbor Arena on Thursday to begin a 2 game series vs. Reading. Unfortunately, the USBL website is not cooperating, not showing Eastern Conference standings as of press time.

www.518softball.com is experiencing some issues, such that we cannot access scores on a timely basis. Hopefully, this will be resolved before sectionals begin next month.

Troy High sports review, through April 17

As we approach the latter half of April, the women's teams at Troy High are hot, but the guys? Not so much.

Flag football:

Current record: 4-1.

The ladies have defended their turf with blowout wins over Ichabod Crane & Catskill, running the current winning streak to 3.

Next: KIPP Tech Valley closes the homestand on Wednesday. The game was, I think, supposed to be a road game, but KIPP doesn't have a home field. The ladies finally hit the road on Friday at Hudson.

Softball:

Current record: 4-2 (2-0 Colonial Council).

Three games in as many days? Not as much of a problem as you'd think, as Sean Geisel's club took down Shaker on the road, then came home and blew out Holy Trinity before going back on the road to beat Schalmont in 9 innings.

Next: The road trip continues at Cohoes on Monday, as the Tigers will try to finally beat Troy, then at Ravena on Tuesday before returning home to play a Lansingburgh club that isn't a pushover like their other women's teams. The week ends with a road game at Mohonasen. Four games in five days this time.

Women's lacrosse:

Current record: 4-2.

The winning streak is at 4 after a tight win over Holy Names on Thursday.

Next: It's back home to play Mohon-Schalmont-Schenectady on Thursday. Then, it's back on the road to play Voorheesville on Friday.

Men's lacrosse:

Current record: 2-2.

The laxmen are back at .500 after beating M-S-S on Friday, 8-6.

Next: Stillwater-Mechanicville visits on Monday night. Friday, they play Voorheesville, but the Colonial Council website says both the men & women are on the road. Maybe the Blackbirds have separate fields? This might be an error either way.

Baseball:

Current record: 2-3.

Last week started promisingly with wins over Queensbury & Schalmont, but ended with a thud in a loss to Averill Park, 11-0. Kody Thompson twirled a 1-hitter, as the game was called after 6 innings (mercy rule), with Kayne Behan getting the lone hit for Troy.

Next: On the road at Cohoes on Monday and Albany on Tuesday, the latter game being played at the Plumeri Sports Complex, where CBA plays their home games, so this might be some sort of charity event. Then, it's back home vs. Lansingburgh on Wednesday before a road game at Mohon on Friday.

Men's modified lacrosse will host Schalmont at Gardner-Dickinson on Tuesday, the first game since the merger of the Troy & Wynantskill districts.

News & notes

New UAlbany women's basketball coach Kelly Morrone was introduced to the local press at a news conference on Thursday at Broadview Center. Coming over from Merrimack, where she spent the last 7 seasons, Morrone is being asked to carry on the winning tradition at Albany, one that has seen 7 NCAA tournament appearances in the last 26 years.

Good luck, Kelly.

The off-season for Siena just keeps getting worse.

Word has come down that former women's basketball coach Jim Jabir has passed away after a lengthy illness at 63. Jabir's last stint with Siena ended just a couple of years ago, as Terry Primm succeeded him as head coach.

Condolences to Jabir's family, and to the extended Siena family.

Mets fans should know by now that WTEN will be the home for Friday games, including today's matinee at Wrigley Field vs. the Chicago Cubs. First pitch is at 2:20 pm. For soap opera junkies, General Hospital will air on either WXXA or Cozi TV.

News & notes

WNYT is hosting a pickleball tournament at True Pickleball in Latham, coming up on May 1. All the pertinent information is on the station's website. The event will be a benefit for Parkinson's Disease research & awareness.

Now, all we need is a pickleball court in Troy.

The Tri-City ValleyCats have set the preseason schedule for 2026.

The 'Cats will have a split squad, not yet confirmed, playing host to the New Jersey Jackals, game time TBA, on April 30. This game is closed to the public, so it's all but a glorified scrimmage.

That same night, Tri-City will play Hudson Valley Community College, a game where the Vikings should get some much needed press coverage. Game time is 6 pm.

After that is a home & home series with Brockton. They'll be in Massachusetts on May 2, returning to The Joe for a 3 pm matinee on May 3. Then, after visiting the NY Boulders on May 4, the 'Cats return home to play Quebec on May 4 before a season-opening road trip to New Jersey & Sussex County, leading to the home opener vs. Quebec on May 15.

Tickets are available at the Bruno Stadium box office.

News & notes

Siena & UAlbany will meet tonight for just the 3rd time in the last 10 years.

The game, scheduled for 7 pm, absent any thunderstorms, will be in honor of former Siena coach & UAlbany alumnus Liam Gleeson, who passed away in December. Albany beat Siena in the NCAA tournament a year ago.

Pro wrestling returns to the 518 with 2 events over the next few weeks.

A midget card, featuring Short Sleeve Sampson, will take place at the Washington Avenue Armory on Saturday. Tickets start at $15. Sampson had a brief cup of coffee with WWE in 2005.

In July, TNA brings their Impact program to town for 2 nights of tapings on July 1-2. What is not clear is if they'll be back at the acoustically challenged Armory, or they'll move down the hill to the Capital Center. Impact airs Thursdays at 9 pm on AMC (Spectrum channel 105).

Troy High sports review, through April 11

Easter break brought a slower than usual start for Troy baseball, but the struggles run across the board.

Men's lacrosse:

Current record: 1-1.

The season opened on a downer with a blowout loss to LaSalle, but the Troy laxmen collected one receipt from Hoosick Falls-Tamarac, which swept Troy last season.

Next: The homestand continues with a Wednesday night game vs. Scotia, and Mohonasen-Schalmont-Schenectady comes in on Friday night.

Women's lacrosse:

Current record: 2-2.

After picking up their first varsity win, the Troy women apparently fell to Amsterdam-Broadalbin-Perth. The game was streamed on Hudl, but bright sunshine on the scoreboard blocked the score from the viewer's vision, so we'll assume for now Troy lost until we hear differently.

Update, 4/14: Troy defeated Amsterdam-Broadalbin-Perth, which picked up its first win on Monday in beating Hudson Falls.

Next: The ladies visit Sutton Field on Tuesday to play LaSalle, then return home Thursday to play Holy Names.

Softball:

Current record: 1-2.

Friday's game at Ravena was cancelled, virtually last minute, due to the cold weather, so Sean Geisel's club still hasn't played a Colonial Council game yet. Then, they get blown out by Averill Park, 16-7, on Saturday.

Next: Absent any additional rain today, the ladies will play Shaker in a game that was postponed due to cold weather last week. After that, they'll return home to play Holy Trinity (weather permitting) on Tuesday, before returning to the road to play Schalmont on Thursday.

Baseball:

Current record: 0-2 (0-1 Colonial Council).

Year 3 for Trevor McCarthy started badly, with a blowout loss to Ravena on Friday, then dropping a heartbreaker to Guilderland on Saturday.

Next: The road trip continues in Queensbury on Tuesday (weather permitting), and Schalmont on Thursday before the home opener on Friday vs. Averill Park.

Flag football:

Current record: 2-1.

The Lady Horses dropped a heartbreaker to Holy Trinity. The result of Friday's game vs. Broadalbin-Perth has not been reported. We are waiting to hear how that turned out.

Update, 4/14: Troy defeated B-P, 19-13, per MaxPreps.

Next: The homestand continues Wednesday with Ichabod Crane coming in, followed by Catskill (Patroon Conference) on Friday.

While we don't have the full results before us, we can report that Troy's track teams placed in the top 10 in both men's & women's competition at the CBA-LaSalle relays on Saturday. The men finished 6th, while the ladies finished 4th. Colonie won both competitions. Troy will host a meet tomorrow, weather permitting, before heading to Niskayuna on Thursday, and Stillwater on Saturday.

We will update as we receive information.

After Gavin Doty committed to Syracuse on Tuesday, Australian Tasmin Goodrick announced Wednesday that he, too, would be headed to Syracuse. Goodrick played just 9 games this past season due to injury.

Nevada Smith might be wise to find someone named Steve McQueen, and.......ah, skip it.

News & notes

Yesterday, we noted the return of Sam Castronova to the Albany Firebirds.

Less than 24 hours later, he's gone again.

At a Tuesday presser, coach/GM Damon Ware announced that Castronova is heading back to the UFL after signing with the Houston Gamblers, who filled a pressing need after their top 2 quarterbacks were injured in an Easter Sunday loss to Birmingham.

The upside, of course, is that all UFL games are televised, be it on Fox, FS1, ABC, or ESPN, so we may well see Castronova on our screens anyway.

The other shoe dropped for Siena Tuesday when it was reported that Gavin Doty will indeed follow coach Gerry McNamara to Syracuse. Doty is from the Syracuse area, so it'll be a homecoming this winter.

We find it amusing that Bill Arsenault of the Albany Times-Union finally gave Troy grad Olivia DeCitise her flowers after throwing a perfect game vs. Merrimack two weeks ago. What he didn't mention, however, was the up & down weekend that followed vs. UAlbany.

We'll catch up with Olivia & UMass Lowell later this week before they welcome the Lady Danes, who will play a mid-week double dip at Siena today.

Tuesday's high school scores:

Women's lacrosse:

Troy 8, Johnstown 7. The Lady Horses made history in winning their first varsity game, and they'll go for 2 in a row today at Amsterdam at 11 am, not 3 pm as originally scheduled.

Burnt Hills 19, Columbia 15.

Men's lacrosse:

Shenendehowa 5, Shaker 4.

Ballston Spa 11, Colonie 3.

CBA 9, Columbia 5.

Guilderland 12, Bethlehem 9.

South Glens Falls 23, Amsterdam 5.

Saratoga 11, Averill Park 4.

Schuylerville 15, Scotia 3.

Burnt Hills 13, Ithaca 10.

LaSalle will host Schalmont under the lights at Bruno Stadium tonight at 7:30 pm. Not sure if it's the only game at The Joe, though.

News & notes

It was assumed that Shane Kirker would continue his basketball career at Air Force after graduating from Berne-Knox-Westerlo this summer.

Things change.

The Albany Times-Union is reporting that Kirker will instead enroll at Mercyhurst after decommitting from Air Force after the Falcons dismissed coach Joe Scott in February. Well, we've seen something like that at Siena in the wake of Gerry McNamara's departure for Syracuse a couple of weeks back.

Best of luck to Shane, although Mercyhurst won't be post-season eligible until the 2027-8 season, as they transition to Division 1 from Division 2.

The Albany Firebirds begin defense of their AF1 title on Saturday against Minnesota at MVP Arena. Kickoff has been moved up to 6 pm, likely to accomodate Vice TV. The 'Birds welcomed back QB Sam Castronova, Duane Brown Isiah Scott, and Isaiah Hardy, who returned to the team after the reorganization of the UFL included the Memphis Showboats not fielding a team this season.

UAlbany didn't waste much time finding someone to succeed Colleen Mullen.

Kelly Morrone was hired late last week, coming over from Merrimack, where she spent the last 7 seasons, as Mullen departed for Rhode Island.

Monday's high school scoreboard:

Softball:

Columbia 2, Bethlehem 0.

Queensbury 25, Amsterdam 1.

Glens Falls 18, Gloversville 1.

South Glens Falls 5, Scotia 2.

Lansingburgh 13, Ravena 2.

Troy High sports review, through April 4

It's Easter/Spring break for schools across the state. Time to check in on how Troy High did last week.

Softball:

Current record: 1-1.

Sean Geisel's club had to rally late to beat Saratoga, 7-4, on Saturday, after dropping the season opener to Colonie.

Next: Tomorrow's non-league road game at Shaker has been postponed due to weather, with cold temperatures today & tomorrow. That means the Lady Horses are idle until Friday, when they open Colonial Council play at Ravena, then visit Averill Park Saturday morning.

Flag football:

Current record: 1-0.

Troy set a school record with a 65-0 thumping of Lansingburgh one week ago.

Next: The Lady Horses welcome Holy Trinity on Wednesday afternoon, and Broadalbin-Perth on Friday.

Tennis:

No record.

Both of last week's meets were postponed due to weather.

The court is quiet this week, as play resumes after the break.

Men's lacrosse:

Current record: 0-1.

New year, same story, although to be fair, Troy was competitive in a loss to Greenwich-Cambridge on Thursday.

Next: The laxmen head across town to Sutton Field at LaSalle tonight, then host Hoosick Falls-Tamarac Wednesday night.

Women's lacrosse:

Current record: 0-2.

Thursday's game at Albany was rained out.

Next: The road trip heads to Johnstown on Tuesday, & Amsterdam Wednesday morning.

Baseball:

No record.

Trevor McCarthy's club opens play Friday afternoon at Ravena, then at Guilderland on Saturday morning.

News & notes

After missing parts of the last three seasons due to injury, Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) is leaving Siena, and entering the transfer portal.

Just what Siena didn't need, after losing their two best players on the men's team within the last week.

I get that she wants playing time, now that it appears she's healthy. UAlbany would be a good option, unless Fontanelle-Posson wants to try her luck further away from home.

Stay tuned.

Seems that the Daily Gazette may be the only paper in the region covering their hometown team, the NY Phoenix, who beat Jersey Shore, 133-122, last night. The Albany Times-Union was only interested last season when the Phoenix played the Albany Patroons, who have this season off.

Finances, yo'.

A gentle reminder that schools across the state are on Easter recess through next week, so most games will be mid-day or early afternoon matinees the next few days.

And speaking of high schools, here's Thursday's scores:

Women's lacrosse:

Queensbury 15, Colonie 5.

Saratoga 11, Burnt Hills 10.

Shenendehowa 17, Guilderland 6.

Men's lacrosse:

Burnt Hills 20, Haldane 5.

Saratoga 7, Ballston Spa 6.

Bethlehem 13, CBA 6.

Greenwich-Cambridge 11, Troy 6.

Johnstown 14, Hoosick Falls-Tamarac 10.

Hudson Falls 5, Broadalbin-Perth 4.

Scotia 15, Amsterdam 8.

Guilderland 9, Shenendehowa 8.

Shaker 9, Averill Park 1.

South Glens Falls 16, Glens Falls 9.

Niskayuna 19, Columbia 1.

Queensbury 12, Schuylerville 9.

Softball:

Glens Falls 14, Granville 3.

Bethlehem graduate Claire Hutton has added another accolade.

Hutton was named by ESPN as #1 among the world's young soccer players. Pretty heady stuff (pun intended).

For viewers in the 518, we will have to wait until we're close to game time to find out where you can see the Mets-San Francisco game tonight (10:15 1st pitch at Oracle Park). The majority of games on WPIX in NYC will be on Fridays this year, and due to Fox & ABC commitments, the games likely will air on either Grit or Cozi TV for now, until the official television season ends next month. As of now, the cable guide doesn't have the game listed for airing in the 518. Fox has UFL football, and ABC has a 2 hour 20/20, which forces the Mets to digital cable.

It's all about ratings in NYC, of course, but upstate viewers are left fishing. Bleech.

Update, 11:40 am.: WTEN will carry Mets-Giants after all, as Judy Justice will air at 9, followed by the Mets' pre-game show, and the game itself. 20/20 will shift to Cozi.

Thursday, April 2, 2026

Weather postponement update, 4/2

For now, this is just a partial list, as more games could be added in the next few hours.

Baseball:

Hudson @ Ichabod Crane. No make-up date set as of press time.

Cobleskill-Richmondville @ Mohonasen. They'll try again tomorrow.

Softball:

Cohoes @ Albany. No make up date set yet.

LaSalle @ Germantown-cancelled.

Tennis:

Mohonasen @ Cobleskill-Richmondville.

Ichabod Crane @ Ravena.

Colonie @ Troy.

News & notes

Siena has ended its search for a new men's basketball coach by going outside the box, if you will.

Nevada Smith, an assistant at Marquette the last few years, was hired Wednesday to take over the program after Gerry McNamara departed for Syracuse a week ago.

Saratoga football star Cam Toomey is still getting offers from Division 1 schools, and they're filling his mailbox, it seems, on a regular basis, per the Albany Times-Union.

Since September, Toomey has gotten offers from Penn State, Syracuse, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida State, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Kentucky, Rutgers, California, Connecticut, & Boston College. Toomey will take advantage of Easter break to visit North Carolina.

Hmmmm. ACC, Big 10, & SEC. Methinks we'll see plenty of Toomey on cable in a couple of years.

News & notes

The off-season for Siena just keeps getting worse.

On Tuesday, freshman Francis Folefac announced he was entering the transfer portal. Something tells me that he, like Gavin Doty, will follow Gerry McNamara to Syracuse. Just a hunch, kids.

The Albany Times-Union, in the course of interviewing former Catholic Central star Julie McBride, learned that McBride and Hoosac School captured the Class AAA title in the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) last month.

Believe me, I've tried to obtain scores from NEPSAC's website on Albany Academy during the season, but, no dice. Speaking of Academy, their swim team captured a championship in NEPSAC as well. Belated congratulations.

We've mentioned previously that McBride owns a gym in Lansingburgh, occupying the former St. Augustine's gym. What we didn't know was that her business partner is former Siena star and ex-Harlem Globetrotter Tay Fisher. Talk about star power!
