The women of LaSalle might've got caught looking ahead to a game vs. Albany Academy, coming up on Friday, such that Tuesday's game at McCormick Hall vs. the Academy of Holy Names, was a trap game after a sort. The Panthers have recovered after a slow start this season, and, in their 2nd appearance in as many seasons on WNYA, made the most of the opportunity presented to them in beating the Lady Cadets, 62-48.
Check the video:
1st year LaSalle coach David Crudo now has to get his team to regroup, with the Bears coming up on Friday.
Interestingly, former Shenendehowa star Meghan Huerter is in her first year of coaching as well, as she directs the LaSalle JV's. Huerter had graduated from UAlbany last spring.
The game of the week shifts to Thursday next week for another Wasaren League game. I think they're moving the high school game broadcasts around due to ratings, but it'd help if they promote the games more than they have. Just sayin'.
Meghan's sister, Jillian, quietly entered the transfer portal after last season, leaving Rutgers for Fairfield. The Lady Stags will be in town to play Siena on February 21.
Quick shots: Breaking with tradition, LaSalle will have their annual hockey alumni game at 5 pm on Saturday, ahead of the annual Cadets For Vets game vs. the CD Jets. I think what they want to do is gin up some extra interest in both games. In the past, the alumni game was in the early afternoon, around 1 pm, but this year, public skating will be in the early afternoon, and then, LaSalle will take over around 4 to prep for what would be a doubleheader.... A quick reminder that for reasons unknown as of press time, WNYA's game of the week is tonight, with Holy Names vs. LaSalle. Tip time will be shortly after 7 pm, as opposed to the usual 6:30 pm start for Colonial Council games. Set your DVR's accordingly. The game is still listed for 6:30 pm, per the Albany Times-Union.
UAlbany linebacker Cam Stodghill (LaSalle) has transferred to Michigan State for the 2026 season, and has already started classes in East Lansing. Stodghill spent 3 seasons with the Great Danes, and felt he needed a change of scenery after two straight losing seasons.
Luckily for Stodghill and for Big 10 fans in the 518, Spectrum Cable has taken the Big 10 Network, a unit of Fox Sports, off its premium tier, and it's now available for all digital subscribers. The change took effect January 1. The timing is perfect, considering college baseball will be getting underway next month.
Siena snapped its losing streak Sunday in beating Mount St. Mary's , 67-50. Justice Shoats led Siena with 18 points. The Saints return home Wednesday to play Sacred Heart (WNYA, WJMZ, 7 pm).

In compiling women's basketball rankings for this past week in today's Albany Times-Union, Troy High is mistakenly listed as being 8-2. They're 7-2 overall, but could go to 8-2 with a win over Lansingburgh tomorrow night.
Don Poutre's club came out of the holiday break hot, beating Ravena & Schalmont, but, insofar as we know, gained a season split with Voorheesville. Thursday's match has not been reported as of press time, and, usually, if Poutre doesn't post anything in the morning announcements the next day, it's usually a sign Troy lost.
Next: 3 matches in 4 days for the 2nd straight week. Troy will be the "road" team vs. LaSalle on Monday, then travel to Mohonasen on Tuesday, before returning home for a rematch with Lansingburgh on Thursday.
Swimming:
Current record: 4-2.
The Flying Devil Brothers fell to Bethlehem as their midseason slump continues.
Next: Back home to face Niskayuna on Tuesday.
Women's basketball:
Current record: 7-2 (6-0 Colonial Council).
All signs now point to a 1st place showdown vs. Albany Academy on January 30 after Troy took down LaSalle on Tuesday, spoiling Kate Gilooly's return to Zotto Gym. Then, Will Harris' club crushed Cohoes on Friday. Kitty litter, anyone?
Next: The ladies host Lansingburgh on Tuesday, then travel to Mohonasen on Friday.
Men's basketball:
Current record: 7-0 (4-0 Colonial Council).
Jamil Hood's squad collected a receipt of their own from LaSalle, then obliterated Cohoes, as the Tigers made their first visit to Troy a night to forget.
Next: It's a battle for city bragging rights with Lansingburgh on Tuesday, and then, Mohonasen comes in on Friday.
The focus tonight is on the Wasaren League, as Tamarac visits Saratoga Catholic. The Bengals enter the game unbeaten in league play.
The live broadcast on WNYA was a little late in starting due to some tech issues, so viewers were given a few seconds of Seinfeld before the game. Part of the tech issues apparently involved the following livestream....
With the announcement that the next WNYA game will be on Tuesday, that leads people to think Siena will have the 7 pm window next Friday. Nope. Siena will be on the road next weekend after a mid-week game at MVP Arena on Wednesday.
Other scores:
Men:
Troy 82, Cohoes 37.
Shaker 72, Schenectady 40.
Women:
Shaker 70, Schenectady 19.
Troy 72, Cohoes 38.
LaSalle 67, Catholic Central 47. LaSalle hosts Holy Names on WNYA on Tuesday.
Hoosic Valley 62, Emma Willard 21.
Shenendehowa 59, Albany 49.
Coxsackie-Athens 73, Rensselaer-Loudonville Christian 37.
WNYT's Rodger Wyland got on the stump for Saratoga & Notre Dame grad Anthony Weaver, who is interviewing for possible head coaching jobs in Atlanta, Arizona, and with the team that drafted him more than 20 years ago, Baltimore. This after being the defensive coordinator under Mike McDaniel in Miami this season. McDaniel was fired on Thursday. We think Weaver should look into a promotion with the Dolphins. Don't you?
Siena's women's basketball team saw their 6 game winning streak end at the hands of Rider on Thursday in a matinee, 61-59, spoiling Kids' Day for over 1600 fans at UHY Center. The Saints stay at home and will entertain Merrimack on Saturday in a benefit for the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY (WVCR, 2 pm). The men host Merrimack tonight at MVP Arena (WJMZ, 7 pm).
Thursday's high school scores:
Women's basketball:
Taconic Hills-Hawthorne Valley 34, Berlin-New Lebanon 16.
Burnt Hills 65, Guilderland 31.
Glens Falls 58, Queensbury 31.
Berne-Knox-Westerlo 63, Fonda-Fultonville 18.
Mechanicville 64, Cambridge 24.
Stillwater 62, Waterford 22.
South Glens Falls 52, Gloversville 21.
Tamarac 67, Saratoga Catholic 59.
Cobleskill-Richmondville 46, Oneonta 39.
Scotia 37, Broadalbin-Perth 31. The Tartans held the Lady Patriots scoreless in the 4th quarter to secure the win.
They did everything but roll out the red carpet for incoming UAlbany football coach Tom Perkovich.
The school held a presser at Broadview Center, and lined up the cheerleaders on either side of the aisle to welcome Perkovich & his family.
Now, the job at hand for Perkovich, who said he was retaining about 50 players from the 2025 team, to get UAlbany back to the postseason.
Meanwhile, former coach Jared Ambrose claims he wasn't given a fair chance to succeed, and that AD Mark Benson had already announced a search for a coach prior to the Great Danes' win over Monmouth in the season finale in November. Benson isn't exactly a popular guy, as basketball fans will tell you, so maybe he'd be better served letting Perkovich settle in under his own terms.........
Belated congratulations to Tamarac men's basketball coach Eric Medved, who won his 200th game on Tuesday. Perfect timing, since the Bengals will be featured tomorrow night on WNYA vs. Saratoga Catholic (7 pm).
Troy High is looking for a new flag football coach after Frank Rogers, who founded the program, left to launch Union College's flag football program, which starts play next year. Talk about a tough act to follow.
Shaker welcomed back multi-sport star Melvin Brown on Tuesday, and he just missed a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds in Tuesday's win over Ballston Spa. All that does is give the Blue Bison one more weapon on the court as they look to secure the Blue division title in the Suburban Council.
Wednesday's high school scores:
Men's hockey:
Adirondack 5, CD Jets 1.
Saratoga 2, Bethlehem 1.
Women's basketball:
Schalmont 57, Niskayuna 49.
Rensselaer-Loudonville Christian 68, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 45.
