News & notes

ESPNU carried Monday's matinee between UAlbany & Vermont at Broadview Center, which drew just over 3,000 fans for the game, and the fans went home happy, as the Great Danes defeated their long time nemesis, 75-68.

Robert Lee, who normally calls Siena games on ESPN+, was at the mic for the game. Consequently, Siena was also home, at MVP Arena, but while the game was streaming on ESPN+ (assume Kelly O'Donnell, Lee's regular partner, called the game), it didn't air on WNYA.

Anyway, Amir Lindsey had a game high 24 points to lead Albany, which hits the road on Thursday to begin a 2 game New England road trip vs. Maine.

Meanwhile, Siena dispatched Fairfield, 85-77, before nearly 6400 fans. Gavin Doty led Siena with 24 points. The Saints will continue the homestand Thursday vs. Marist, in a game that will air on SNY in addition to ESPN+.

Over in Connecticut, Siena fell to Fairfield, 86-50. Leading scorer Francesca Schiro was the lone Saint in double figures with 17 points. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) added 9. The Lady Saints have dropped four of five, and will try to reverse the tide on Thursday at Marist.

In other Siena news, Siena grad Jeff Hafley, most recently the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, was named the head coach of the Miami Dolphins on Monday. Hafley, who also was a defensive assistant at UAlbany, has head coaching experience at Boston College, but now must navigate the rough waters of the NFC North to get the Packers back to the postseason.

Anthony Weaver (Saratoga/Notre Dame) has been interviewing for some of the remaining head coaching vacancies in the NFL, and likely could get a call from Buffalo after the Bills dismissed Sean McDermott on Monday. However, I have thoughts on the Bills' vacancy over at The Land of Whatever that might lead to someone else getting that gig.

Monday's high school scoreboard:

Women's basketball:

Susan E. Wagner 59, Amsterdam 50.

St. Mary's of Manhasset (Long Island) 75, Shaker 63.

North Warren 52, Johnsburg-Minerva 30.

Ballston Spa 43, Schalmont 33.

Mechanicville 57, Fonda-Fultonville 20.

Johnstown 40, Schuylerville 17.

Men's basketball:

Hoosic Valley 67, Chatham 59.

Johnstown 42, Voorheesville 35.

Averill Park 41, Ravena 33.

Men's hockey:

West Genesee 3, Shenendehowa 0.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa 7, Northeast Clinton 3.

Curiously, CBA quietly changed hockey coaches, as Thomas Gaunay is the current coach of the skating Brothers, replacing Adrien Melrose, who was let go either in 2024 or 2025.

LaSalle salutes the vets, 1/17/26

On Saturday, Knickerbacker Ice Arena in Lansingburgh hosted LaSalle's annual Cadets For Vets fundraiser, which benefits the Albany Housing Coalition.

The game, which began at 7:45 pm, was the main event of a tripleheader that also included a youth hockey game in the early afternoon.

After the traditional ceremonies, which this year included speeches by veteran and NY Senator Jake Ashby and Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello, a Lansingburgh native herself, the game began, with the winless Jets looking to spoil the party for the Cadets.

If only it were that simple.

Kellen Schreiber got the scoring started when he cashed in a power play goal just seconds into the man-advantage. Patrick Hill put the visitors on the board to tie the game, but Danny Wiese put LaSalle up for good, stuffing on past an overmatched Mason Surprenant to make it 2-1 Cadets. Giovanni Jarvis made it 3-1 right before intermission.

To paraphrase Herman's Hermits, the 2nd period was the same as the 1st, though most of the names were different in the scorebook. The Donohue brothers, Edward & Colin, each tallied a goal. The Jets' Bradley Ives tried to keep it close, pulling the Jets to within 5-2, but Wiese struck again to make it 6-2 heading into the final period.

In the 3rd period, LaSalle coach Tim Flanigan decided to be a riverboat gambler, and lifted starting goaltender Nate Hartkern for senior Alaina Winther, who hadn't played in a while. While Winther gave up three goals, Wiese countered that by adding two more goals, finishing with 6 points total on the night (4 goals, 2 assists), to put the game away. The Cadets, after losing to Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa the night before, kept the Jets out of the win column, 8-5.

Earlier, LaSalle had its annual alumni game, which this year consisted of 2 23 minute halves. Unlike Old Timers' Day games in baseball, for example, many of the players are recent graduates. Michael Nocera (2025) & Tom Ryan (2018) had 2 goals apiece to lead the white team over the blue team, also by an 8-5 score.

The day started with a Troy Hockey Association game between the homestanding Titans and Adirondack. The visitors came away with a 10-3 victory in front of a sparse crowd, as the bleachers wouldn't fill up until LaSalle began their day's events. The Cadets will have a full week of practice before returning to play the "Guilderville" Storm next Saturday at 5:45 pm.

Troy High sports review, through January 16

Time is running out for swimming & bowling, with sectionals right around the corner. Basketball just continues to roll along.

Swimming:

Current record: 4-3.

The slumping Flying Devil Brothers fell to Niskayuna on Tuesday, but what was more telling was that it took a couple of days before the results were posted to Swimcloud. Hmmmmmm.

Next: A road trip to Ballston Spa on Tuesday.

Bowling:

Final regular season record: 7-7.

Don Poutre's club has dropped 4 matches in a row, having been swept by Lansingburgh on Thursday. The Knights remain the standard-bearers in the Colonial Council.

Next: The regular season is over, so the Flying Horses are idle until the league championships at Boulevard Bowl on February 3.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 8-2 (5-1 Colonial Council).

Your eyes do not deceive you. Reality hit the Horses when they lost to Lansingburgh on Tuesday, then came home and looked flat in a loss to Red Hook on Wednesday. However, Jamil Hood's club recovered to beat Mohonasen on Friday.

Next: A non-league road trip to old nemesis CBA on Tuesday, then returning home to play Ichabod Crane on Friday.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 9-2 (8-0 Colonial Council).

There's only one word to describe the blowouts over Lansingburgh & Mohonasen. Those teams ended up as roadkill. The 70 point margin of victory over the luckless Lady Knights was the biggest of the season for Troy, which then followed up by crushing Mohon by nearly 40. Ouch!

Next: The ladies will have three games in four days, staying on the road to play old rival Bethlehem on Wednesday, then Ichabod Crane on Friday, before returning home next Saturday to play Hudson Falls, a make-up date from last month's Glens Falls holiday tournament. Tip time there is 2 pm.

High School Fridays: Mohonasen @ Troy, 1/16/26

Jamil Hood's Troy High squad needed to stanch the bleeding, if you will, after two consecutive losses. With Mohonasen in town, they couldn't afford another loss in Colonial Council loss, not with a non-league game at CBA looming next week.

After Mohon went to overtime to win the JV game, the varsity game started just before 7 pm. After the first quarter ended with the teams tied at 15, the Flying Horses took over.....

Next week brings the road trip to CBA, and then, it's back to league play vs. Ichabod Crane a week from tonight.

News & notes

The women of LaSalle might've got caught looking ahead to a game vs. Albany Academy, coming up on Friday, such that Tuesday's game at McCormick Hall vs. the Academy of Holy Names, was a trap game after a sort. The Panthers have recovered after a slow start this season, and, in their 2nd appearance in as many seasons on WNYA, made the most of the opportunity presented to them in beating the Lady Cadets, 62-48.

Check the video:

1st year LaSalle coach David Crudo now has to get his team to regroup, with the Bears coming up on Friday.

Interestingly, former Shenendehowa star Meghan Huerter is in her first year of coaching as well, as she directs the LaSalle JV's. Huerter had graduated from UAlbany last spring.

The game of the week shifts to Thursday next week for another Wasaren League game. I think they're moving the high school game broadcasts around due to ratings, but it'd help if they promote the games more than they have. Just sayin'.

Meghan's sister, Jillian, quietly entered the transfer portal after last season, leaving Rutgers for Fairfield. The Lady Stags will be in town to play Siena on February 21.
