Weekend sports roundup, 1/2-4

Delanie Hill led 5 Great Danes in double figures as UAlbany took down UMass-Lowell, 74-62, on Kids' Day at Broadview Center on Saturday. The matinee attracted just under 1500 fans, which speaks to a lack of pre-game promotion outside the campus. Albany (11-4) will play Bryant this Saturday.

On the other hand, the Albany men have dropped three in a row after falling to Lowell, 71-83. Amir Lindsey had 19 points, leading 4 Great Danes in double figures. The men will have Kids' Day, sponsored by the United Way, this Saturday vs. Bryant.

Siena's men snapped a 3 game losing streak on Sunday in toppling Rider, 74-65. Gavin Doty led the Saints with 19 points. They'll be back Friday at MVP Arena vs. Merrimack.

The turn of the year hasn't slowed down the women at Siena, though, as they ran their current winning streak to 6 in a row in beating Iona, 94-80, on Saturday. A Kids' Day matinee is under way as we speak vs. Iona. Results tomorrow.

Union College's men's hockey team came out of the holiday break, thumping Royal Military College in an exhibition, 9-0, on Saturday. Tomato can city. The same, however, cannot be said for the women, who have now gone winless in their last 4 games (0-3-1) after falling to Brown, 3-1, Saturday night.

There's something about Vermont that turns 518 college teams into weaklings.

We know about the dominance the Catamounts have enjoyed vs. Albany in basketball. Vermont's hockey team had their way with RPI on Saturday night, with a 3-0 shutout. RPI falls to 5-14 with the loss. The women aren't that much better, at 6-17, after losing to Yale, 7-2, on Saturday.

Troy High sports review, through January 2

Welcome to 2026. The biggest tests for Troy's sports teams are still to come.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 5-0 (2-0 Colonial Council).

Unlike the College Football Playoffs, there was almost no rust for Jamil Hood's squad after 2 weeks of nothing but practices, as they held off Watervliet-Heatly, 54-47, on Friday night.

Next: It's a trip to noisy McCormick Hall at LaSalle on Tuesday, and, then, Cohoes, blown out by Cobleskill-Richmondville, comes in next Friday.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 5-2 (4-0 Colonial Council).

The Glens Falls Holiday Tournament was turned into a 1 day double dip, as Monday's game vs. Hudson Falls was cancelled, sparing the Bulldogs a likely beatdown. The host Black Bears, however, collected a receipt on Will Harris and the Lady Horses on Tuesday.

Next: Kate Gilooly returns to Zotto Gym with LaSalle on Tuesday, and then, it's a trip to Cohoes.

Bowling & swimming resume this week:

Bowling:

Monday vs. Ravena.

Tuesday @ Schalmont.

Thursday vs. Voorheesville.

Swimming:

Tuesday vs. Bethlehem.

High School Fridays: Like looking in a mirror (Watervliet-Heatly @ Troy, 1/2/26)

Six-plus years ago, Watervliet High made its first visit to Zotto Gym to scrimmage Troy before the 2019-20 season.

Tonight, they played in a game that counted.

Jamil Hood's Flying Horses hadn't played in 2 weeks after blowing out Ravena on December 19. Watervliet-Heatly, as it's now known, had some game action in the interim, and it was just a question of whether or not Troy had fresh legs, or if the layoff would prove costly, just like we've seen in the College Football Playoffs.

Troy opened the evening by winning the JV game. However, the school decided to only stream the varsity match on Hudl:

Troy High School | High School Sports | Home | Hudl

Troy, now 5-0 (2-0 Colonial Council) had seen its mirror image, and I'd guess this is because many of the players on both teams have been tutored by Coach Hood.

League play resumes on Tuesday, when Troy visits LaSalle.

Other scores as of press time:

Greenwich 96, Ticonderoga 53.

Cambridge 79, Lake George 54.

Cobleskill-Richmondville 64, Cohoes 26. That doesn't bode well for the Tigers when they play Troy next Friday night at Zotto Gym.

News & notes

All along, I'd been under the impression that Watervliet and Troy had never played each other.

A quick Google search on New Year's Eve proved me wrong.

Turns out the two teams met in November 2019 in what was really a pre-season scrimmage. Tomorrow night, it's for reals, as the kids say today. The Cannoneers make their first regular season visit to Zotto Gym, now united with Heatly. Back in 2019, 'Vliet was in the Colonial Council, where Troy is now, while the Flying Horses were in the Suburban Council. Today, Watervliet-Heatly plays in the Patroon Conference, which absorbed the Central Hudson Valley League a few years back to welcome Heatly, Germantown, Cairo-Durham, et al.

Tip time is approximately 6:30 pm. Dress warm.

Now, let's take a look at Wednesday's scoreboard:

Women's basketball:

Hartford 76, Berlin-New Lebanon 31.

Fort Plain-Canajoharie 55, Brookfield 52.

Warrensburg 52, Cambridge 29.

Men's basketball:

Edmeston 56, Fort Plain 48.

News & notes

Will Richardson had transferred from Fordham to UAlbany in the hope of playing for coach Dwayne Killings this season.

It's not going to happen.

An NCAA investigation into Richardson's eligibility kept him off the court as the season started, and, on Tuesday, Richardson was released from the program. Seems there were things that came up before he came to Albany that raised red flags.

All that does is continue a season of misery at UAlbany.

Killings' squad dropped a 96-67 decision to South Carolina Tuesday. Amir Lindsey led Albany with 18 points. America East play starts for the moribund Great Danes (4-11) Saturday at UMass-Lowell.

In other local college action, Skidmore defeated Coast Guard, 83-71.

Tuesday's high school scoreboard:

Men's hockey:

McQuaid 7, CD Jets 0.

Orchard Park 12, CBA 3.

Adirondack 3, Guilderville 2.

Saratoga 4, Hawks 2.

Shenendehowa @ West Genesee, postponed due to weather. No make-up date set.

Women's basketball:

Moriah 52, Hartford 36.

Granville 47, Saratoga Catholic 41.

Ballston Spa 73, South Glens Falls 54.

Mechanicville 39, Burnt Hills 32.

Coxsackie-Athens 66, Tamarac 39.

LaSalle 57, Hudson Falls 46.

Harrisville 49, Lake George 37.

Mayfield 51, Gloversville 39.

Cohoes 33, Whitehall 28.

Galway 43, Northville 36.

Glens Falls 60, Troy 54. The Black Bears avenged last year's loss.

Warrensburg 46, Argyle 36.

Oxford 39, Hoosic Valley 24.

Penfield 60, Broadalbin-Perth 44.
