News & notes

 The Tri-City Tide are an expansion team in The Basketball League, and it certainly showed last night in a 135-110 loss to the Albany Patroons. Ja'Quaye James led 6 Pats in double figures with 23 points as the Patroons soared to 9-1. Coach Derrick Rowland, Sr. earned his 100th career win as Patroons coach.

Here's Chuck Miller's take on the last week and change, including a short laundry list of bad puns in describing last night's game:

Three big wins by the Albany Patroons this week – Chuck The Writer

Ohhh, man, that's even worse than when I used references to Don Henley and Peanuts in doing ValleyCats game results a few years back.

A quick reminder that tonight's Albany Firebirds game at Salina will air on Vice at 6:30 pm. Get your DVR's ready, grab some after dinner mints or snacks, and get ready.

Most of Saturday's high school slate was wiped out by rain.

On the other hand, Shenendehowa won a non-league men's lacrosse match over Lakeland-Panas, 5-1. On the women's side, Burnt Hills handled Kingston, 17-6.

======================================================
As you can tell, Saturday's softball schedule was washed out, including Lowell @ UAlbany. The game will not be made up.
=======================================================
Shaker grad Jeff Hoffman entered Saturday's game for Toronto vs. the Mets hoping to keep a tie game moving into extra innings.

Francisco Lindor had other ideas.

Lindor hit a sacrifice fly to send fans home happy as the Mets downed the Blue Jays, 3-2.

Meanwhile, Ian Anderson had a better outing for the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.

Anderson gave up a run on 2 hits in 2 innings, as the Angles routed Cleveland, 10-4. Unfortunately, Anderson's ERA sits at 11.25 as of this morning.

Troy High sports review, through April 4

 The spring season has begun. Tennis, baseball, & outdoor track are scheduled to start this week, weather permitting. Meanwhile, let's take a look at last week's action.

Flag football:

Current record: 2-0.

Frank Rogers' club is off to a fast start again after avenging a loss to Shenendehowa on opening day, then beating Guilderland on the road. Football is one of the few sports left where Troy will face teams from the Suburban Council.

Next: The Lady Horses return home to play Colonie on Wednesday, then travel to Shaker on Friday, and will host Monroe-Woodbury on Saturday.

Softball:

Current record: 0-2.

Another slow start for Sean Geisel's club, as they dropped non-league games to Shaker & Colonie. Starting play in the Colonial Council can't come soon enough.

Next: The ladies are idle until Thursday, when they host Schalmont, then it's a non-league matinee vs. Burnt Hills on Saturday.

Men's lacrosse:

Current record: Either 0-1 or 0-2. The result of Friday's game vs. Voorheesville has not been reported.

The Troy laxmen were blown off the field vs. Schalmont-Mohon-Schenectady on Wednesday, 13-2. Different league, same issues.

Next: Troy goes across town to Lansingburgh for a rush hour special vs. the Knights on Wednesday, then play Hoosick Falls-Tamarac (Wasaren League) on the road on Friday.

And the rest.....

Tennis opens vs. Cobleskill-Richmondville (Western Athletic Conference) on Monday, then a road trip to Albany Academy on Thursday. This meet was pushed back a week for unknown reasons.

Outdoor track, marking year 2 for coach Jordan Canzeri, opens Wednesday at Voorheesville. On Saturday, the ladies will be at LaSalle, while the guys travel to Niskayuna.

Baseball: Trevor McCarthy's group will look for revenge vs. Schalmont Monday (weather permitting) before embarking on a 2 game non-league road trip to Averill Park (Wednesday) and Lakeland on Saturday. I didn't even know there was a Lakeland in New York until I saw the schedule.

In case of weather, check your schools, and watch this space when we pick up postponements.

News & notes

 The season series between the NY Phoenix & Albany Patroons is now even at 1 game apiece after Albany exacted a measure of revenge with a 109-104 win on Friday, ending the Phoenix's season opening winning streak.

Mustapha Traore led the Phoenix with 22 points. J'Quaye James paced the Patroons with 33 points.

NY is off tonight, while the Pats host the Tri-City Tide at the Washington Avenue Armory at 7 pm. The Tide visit Armory Studios on Sunday.
================================================
It was not the kind of homecoming Olivia DeCitise might've hoped for when UMass-Lowell came to UAlbany on Friday.

Decitise, a sophomore (Troy), started game 1, and was cuffed around for 6 runs (4 earned) in 3 2/3 innings as Albany shut out the River Hawks, 8-0. Kate Powers pitched a complete game, then earned the save in game 2 as Albany completed the sweep, 6-5. DeCitise entered game 2 as a pinch-runner, but was left stranded.

The teams are supposed to complete the series today at 2, weather permitting.
=================================================
It wasn't enough for the Suburban Council to lose Troy as a league member after last season.

This year, Schenectady is playing as an independent in baseball. Something tells me, given the struggles the Schenectady women have had in soccer, basketball, and softball in recent years, the Patriots have one foot out the door, and could join Troy in the Colonial Council. Just my opinion.
====================================================
The rest of Friday's college scores:

Baseball:

Union & Bard split a doubleheader, with each team winning by a 4-3 count.

Siena 5, Merrimack 3.

Skidmore 11, RPI 8.

Russell Sage 14, Keuka 1 (7 innings).

Softball:

Siena swept Sacred Heart, 3-1 & 6-5.

RPI swept Skidmore, 12-1 & 18-0. Both games went 5 innings.

Russell Sage split with St. John Fisher. The Gators won the opener, 1-0, but dropped the nightcap, 11-2.

Union split a doubleheader with Ithaca. The Bombers won game 1, 10-0, in 5 innings, while the Garnet Chargers salvaged the nightcap, 2-1.

Women's tennis:

Quinnipiac 5, Siena 2.

News & notes

 Former Siena coach Jamion Christian is returning to haunt UAlbany anew, this time within their own league.

Christian was hired Thursday to be the new head coach at Bryant, an America East rival of Albany, succeeding Phil Martelli, Jr., who led Bryant to the America East title last month.

In his only season at Siena, Christian led the Saints to a 17-15 record before leaving for George Washington. Martelli left Bryant to be the head man at Virginia Commonwealth.

The Albany Times-Union breaks down their basketball all-stars by large schools & small schools, to give more student-athletes some postseason shine.

Many of the women on their large school all-star team were similarly honored by WNYT earlier this season.

Large Schools 1st team:

El'Dior Dobere & Tanavia Turpin, Catholic Central.

Shea Canavan, Queensbury.

Kaitlyn Robbins, Bethlehem.

Alivia Landy, Columbia.

Dobere was also named Player of The Year.

2nd team:

Jayla Geter, Shaker.

Kate Milliham, Shenendehowa.

Sarah Rainville, Columbia.

Arianna Verardi, Averill Park.

3rd team:

Azera Gates & Jasannti Francis, Albany.

Peyton Hoblock, Shaker.

Kendyl Ouimette, Columbia.

Brooke Lilley, Guilderland.

Notice how Catholic Central was the only Colonial Council team represented. Same with Queensbury of the Foothills Council. The bias in favor of the Suburban Council is obvious.

Small schools 1st team:

Kayla Beaudoin, Tamarac.

Brooke Kuzmich & Bailee Wolfe, Greenwich.

Mia Carmody, Voorheesville.

Kate Gilooly, LaSalle.

Kuzmich was also Player of The Year.

News & notes

 The Albany Times-Union's men's swimming & diving all-star teams have been announced, and the Flying Devil Brothers of CBA/Troy/Columbia are well represented.

CBA senior Quinn Nelson not only made the 1st team in the 100 meter backstroke, but he's all over the 2nd team in the following:

100 & 500 meter freestyle.

200 meter individual medley.

200 meter medley relay (with teammates Liam Witting, Andrew Orcutt, and Rocco Jabour).

Witting, also a senior, made the 2nd team in the 50 meter freestyle, and the relay team was on the 1st team for the 400 meter freestyle relay. Jabour, the lone Troy swimmer, should be these teams again next year, as he's only a sophomore.

It's opening day in major league baseball for everyone except the Dodgers & Cubs, who opened last week in Tokyo.

For local fans, they'll get to see the Yankees and Mets this afternoon:

Milwaukee at the Yankees, 3 pm, ESPN, WTMM.

Mets @ Houston, 4 pm, SNY.

The Yankees have already made it clear that they will expand their usual pre-game coverage to cover the pomp & circumstance of their home opener, as they do every year. The Mets still don't have a radio home since they dissolved their syndicated network 6 years ago, but you can access the radio broadcast on Audacy.
====================================================
Lacrosse season has officially begun in Section II.

In a battle of the Spartans in women's action, Queensbury blew away Burnt Hills, 18-6. The men's game between LaSalle and Guilderland was, as I had suspected, a scrimmage, not an actual game.

Today, Voorheesville hosts the Academy of Holy Names at 4:30 pm, to start the Colonial Council season, while two men's non-league games are on tap, with Hoosick Falls-Tamarac playing at Mohonasen-Schenectady at 4:30, and Greenwich-Cambridge at Ichabod Crane at 5 pm.
