News & notes

Former Shenendehowa star Kevin Huerter has adjusted well to life in the NBA.

Huerter, drafted by Atlanta back in June, scored 16 points Friday night as the Hawks, with one of the worst records in the league, defeated the equally moribound Knicks. It was just the 8th win of the season for Atlanta, and with Huerter, they have a blue-chipper who will be an asset for them for years to come. Seeing as how the Knicks and Brooklyn each play Atlanta about four times a year, it means the balance of the Hawks' TV appearances will be on MSG and the YES network, the latter of which holds the broadcast rights to the Nets. Otherwise, you'd have to pay premium prices to access the Fox Sports regional channels where the Hawks games otherwise appear.

This is how bad things have gotten at The Record, otherwise known as El Cheapo Press because of their parent companies' penny pinching business strategy.

For two straight weeks, El Cheapo has actually reprinted some early week scores later in the same week. What that says to me is that while El Cheapo needs fresh material, not every school in Section II is cooperating with consistency. They had no reporters present for Thursday's Troy-Colonie basketball & bowling matches. As of press time, the bowling match still hadn't been reported to either El Cheapo or the more reliable Albany Times-Union.

For what it's worth, back when I was a student at Troy, they would include basketball results, especially if Troy won, during the next day's morning announcements. They don't do that much anymore. Hmmmmmmm...

We told you last night that LaSalle pulled out a win at the last second of a non-league game vs. Green Tech. Final score was 62-61 in favor of the Cadets, and some of the players, including Connor Cepiel, who hit the game winning basket, crossed over to Conway Arena for the remainder of the LaSalle-Queensbury hockey game to cheer on their brethren. Now, that's solidarity.

Unfortunately, while the result was submitted late to the Times-Union, they don't have full game stats as of press time.

As a public service, we have the updated Colonial Council basketball standings for the boys, courtesy of the Times-Union website, and we'll leave you with that 'til next time. Merry Christmas.
