News & notes

I've heard of keeping it in the family, but this gets the grand prize.

Weeks after welcoming back Jim Jabir as their new women's head basketball coach, Siena College decided to bring Jabir's wife, Angie, as senior associate athletic director & senior women's administrator. She'll work under long time AD John D'Argenio, who stressed at a Friday presser that Angie will not be her husband's supervisor.

Meanwhile, the men's team is getting some help, with Michael Tertsea transferring from Division II Gannon to join the Saints next season.

Mechanicville native Chad Brown has two horses entered in tonight's Preakness Stakes. Post time is at 6:50 pm (NBC, OTB-TV). Brown was denied the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, but everyone would be happy if Derby winner Medina Spirit was denied this time. Trainer Bob Baffert is not in Baltimore, in order to avoid unnecessary distractions after being suspended from Churchill Downs in the wake of his horse's failed drug test following the Derby.

Troy continues to roll merrily along in baseball & softball.

Chris Strack's baseball squad remains undefeated headed into today's brunch matinee at the College of St. Rose vs. Albany, trimming Guilderland, 1-0. Unfortunately, in part due to space considerations, the result was not published in today's newspapers. Sean Geisel's softball team got back to .500 with a 7-2 win over the Lady Dutch (2-2). Alyssa Sano went 3-3, including a 2 run homer, to lead the Lady Horses.

Guilderland salvaged the day by keeping Troy's men's tennis team winless with a 9-0 shutout. Troy is 0-4 on the court.
