News & notes

LaSalle track star Getachew "Gitch" Hayes added to his ridiculous senior year resume Saturday in winning the Federation meet at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.

Hayes, headed for North Carolina next season, was one of three Section II runners in the top 10, the others being Ryan Bush (Saratoga, 5th) and Julian Franjieh (Niskayuna, 10th).

In team competition, Burnt Hills finished first in the men's division, while Saratoga won the women's title.

At Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls, speaking of Burnt Hills, the Lady Spartans captured another state championship in volleyball by sweeping Walter Panas, 3-0. Section II Class D champion Galway, however, came up short in a 3-1 loss to Mount Academy, the Section IX champion.

The Albany Times-Union's James Allen clarified the starting times for Saturday's state semi-finals, since the chart is in error, and has not been updated as of press time.

The Class C game between Schuylerville & Dobbs Ferry will start at noon, with the Class B match between Ravena and Pleasantville set for a 3 pm kickoff. Class D titlist Greenwich will play Moriah Friday at 3 pm. All three games are at Middletown High, just outside of Poughkeepsie. Winners advance to the Carrier Dome the following weekend.
