The state of Troy High winter sports, 2022

With one month of winter sports in the books, and with this being a night without anything newsworthy, let's see how Troy High is doing so far.

Indoor track? Fuhgeddaboutit. The Flying Horses haven't won a meet, indoors or outdoors, in years, and that includes cross country.

Bowling: We're still waiting for the result of the December 16 road match vs. Ballston Spa, which, per Schedule Galaxy, hasn't won a match yet this season, but after reaching out to Troy AD Paul Reinisch earlier today, we are waiting on a response. The Troy keglers open a 3 match homestand tomorrow vs. Schenectady, followed by Guilderland on Thursday, and Shenendehowa on January 11. Home matches are at Uncle Sam Lanes. Troy, in fact, will have five of their last 8 matches at home, with Senior Day vs. CBA on January 20.

On to basketball. The women have lost six in a row, and are winless in the Suburban Council as they open a four game homestand tomorrow with Saratoga. The Lady Streaks are hoping to get senior star Natasha Chudy, daughter of coach Robin Chudy, back from COVID protocols in time for the game. Otherwise, the burden of leading the team falls to sophomore Emily Wise. Troy (1-7 overall, 0-4 Suburban Council) gets a pair of relative gimmes at the end of the week, with winless Ballston Spa (Friday) & Schenectady (Saturday afternoon) coming in before always dangerous Albany closes out the homestand on January 14.

As for the guys, a non-league game vs. Mount Anthony Union of Vermont, set for tonight, was postponed due to COVID (natch), and has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 15. John Killian's club (4-3 overall, 3-1 Suburban Council) opens a 4 game road trip tomorrow at Saratoga, which is always a tough out, followed by Ballston Spa on Friday, a non-league game against Schalmont on Saturday afternoon, and then Albany on January 14.

With news of a winter storm headed into the 518 later this week, we caution that you might want to check with THS about events on Thursday and/or Friday.

Which teams need the most help? The women's basketball team and the indoor track squad. Men's basketball should be just fine, with the only bumps in the road remaining being the remaining non-league games (Schalmont, Mount Anthony Union, Kingston), and league matches vs. Saratoga, Shen, & CBA.

The bowlers figure to be just fine, too, as long as they can take advantage of the home field.

The men's swimming & diving team, merged with CBA, is winless so far this season. The Flying Brothers are idle until January 13, when they face Niskayuna. You have to hope they can turn things around.
