News & notes

The Freihofer's Run For Women isn't all the way back to its traditional space on the calendar, but after last year's race took place in September, runners from across the country and the globe gathered in Albany on Saturday for the 2022 edition.

Allie Ostrander, from Seattle, won the race in 15 minutes and 48 seconds, 23 seconds ahead of runner-up Allie Kiefler, from Austin, Texas. The highest finishing local runner was Emily Bush of Saratoga, who finished 6th.

The Carolina Cobras seem to love playing in Albany.

Returning to MVP Arena for the first time since upsetting the Albany Empire in week 1 of the National Arena League season, the Cobras held off a late Albany rally in the 4th quarter to escape with a 58-50 win on Saturday night. The Empire now sit 2 games behind the Cobras, with the two losses making all the difference in the world.

Vanderbilt grad Kumar Rocker was the main attraction Saturday at Bruno Stadium, but he lasted just four innings, giving up a 2 run homer in the 2nd inning. However, the Tri-City Valleycats' offense & bullpen bailed him out, scoring 10 unanswered runs to clinch yet another series, beating Trois-Rivieres, 10-2, before just over 4,000 fans, including major league scouts. Rocker finished with 6 strikeouts. The teams will finish the series this afternoon at 5 pm.

Traditionally, Section II teams tend to falter when they reach the state regional finals in spring sports. It just happens.

To this point, only one Section II team remains in men's lacrosse, and that would be Class C champion Burnt Hills, which took a 4-2 lead over Pelham Memorial at halftime at Shaker, then tacked on 8 more goals in the 2nd half to punch their ticket to the state final four with a 12-5 win. The reward for the Spartans is a de facto home game at UAlbany's Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in the state semifinals on Wednesday, where they'll face Manhasset. Game time is 6:30 pm.
