News & notes

Throughout softball season, there was a lot of speculation that Troy High 2-sport star Olivia DeCitise was considering Nebraska for bowling in college.

Then, last month, came a game changer.

On July 22, DeCitise posted on Twitter that she is committed to UMass-Lowell, likely more for softball than bowling, given her extraordinary junior season.

Stay tuned.

The Tri-City Valleycats completed a 3-game sweep of the New Jersey Jackals, 6-4, on Sunday, and this was after the game was delayed 45 minutes due to a mid-afternoon rainstorm.

We've talked about the 'Cats' 2nd generation star, Brantley Bell (son of Jay), but the Jackals have a 2nd generation Bell of their own in George Bell, Jr., whose father starred for Toronto, Cleveland, and Baltimore in his playing days. The younger Bell homered in a losing effort on Sunday.

In other 'Cats news, it appears more than a few fans listen to Ben Patten's morning show on WROW, and have apparently raised issues about how Patten hasn't announced Valleycats scores all season. That changed this morning when, after reading the Mets, Yankees, & Red Sox results, Patten read the 'Cats result as well. Better late than never.

We've noted how Atlanta Braves pitcher Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) has had control issues this season. After going 4 2/3 innings on Friday, Anderson was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday with the goal of correcting his mechanical issues. He's expected back on Saturday to pitch in a doubleheader vs. Miami.

It didn't help matters on Friday when Mets announcer Gary Cohen misidentified Anderson's alma mater as "Clifton Park High School".  Karma bit the Mets on Friday, but then.....!

Pretty sure more than a few people were stunned to find Saturday's Mets-Braves nightcap on WRGB instead of sister station WCWN. Due to the CW having first run programming on Saturday, the decision was made to air the game on CBS6, which hasn't had any baseball this season, now that the Yankees ended their association with WPIX for Amazon Prime.
