High School Fridays: Homecoming turns into a dog show (Ballston Spa @ Averill Park, 10/7)

Friday Night Matchup hits Averill Park tonight, as the Warriors are celebrating Homecoming, coming home with a 2 game winning streak. Ballston Spa provides the opposition in what figured to be an important game for both teams.

The Scotties took the opening kickoff, and went the distance, culminating in Blaine Zoller catching a touchdown pass from Nico Savini. Unfortunately, the PAT failed after Savini tried to save it with a 2 point conversion attempt.

Averill Park marched right back down the field, as Nick Galuski took it in himself from 12 yards out. However, their point after also failed, and we were tied at 6 going into the 2nd quarter.

On the first play of the 2nd quarter, Savini was intercepted by Jake Rizzo. But Averill Park gave it right back on the very next play via a fumble, with the Scotties in prime position to move back in front. Savini matched Galuski's touchdown with one of his own, running it in from 5 yards out. This time, the PAT was successful, and Ballston Spa took a 13-6 lead.

Four minutes later, after a Warrior punt, Darren Insognia bulled his way into the end zone on a 22 yard run. The PAT failed, but Ballston Spa opened up a 19-6 lead. Back came the Warriors, just a couple of minutes later, as Dan Milanese punched it in from the 2 yard line. Galuski, also the kicker, added the extra point, and it was now 19-13.

Right before halftime, Savini struck again, this time from 34 yards. The 2 point conversion failed again, and the Scotties had a 25-13 lead at the break. It wouldn't last.

Averill Park took the 2nd half kickoff, and marched down the field, as Galuski scored his 2nd touchdown of the night, plus the extra point, to cut the lead to five at 25-20. Less than a minute into the 4th quarter, Jacob Phelps, accepting his mission, ran it in from 8 yards out. Galuski hit Rizzo for the 2 point conversion, and the Warriors moved back in front at 28-25.

However, it took just 22 seconds for Ballston Spa to answer. On the first play following the kickoff, Savini was off to the races, going 79 yards to put the Scotties back in front. Savini hit Taylor Gothan for the 2 point conversion, and the Scotties now led, 33-28.

Back came the Warriors again. Galuski connected  with Rizzo for 35 yards, but the conversion failed. Averill Park now was up by just one, 34-33. It didn't last. Less than a minute later, Savini connected with Zoller again, this time from 50 yards. The conversion failed, and it was now 39-34.

Halfway through the 4th quarter, Averill Park coach Zach Gobel used all of his 2nd half timeouts, once again exhibiting poor clock management.

"I taught him how to watch the clock, but he doesn't listen!"

Still, Averill Park took the lead one final time, as Charlie Ratigan punched it in from the 1 yard line. Of course, the conversion failed. Worse news for Averill Park, however, is that they left enough time on the clock for Savini and the Scotties.

After a 4th down pass to Isaiah Hannah set up Ballston Spa at the Averill Park 5 yard line. Savini ran in untouched on the very next play. But, yep, the conversion failed again. Averill Park had one last chance, but time ran out, and the Scotties escaped with a 45-40 win. Averill Park goes to 3-3 on the season overall.
