Are the wheels falling off for Troy basketball?

The season, barring the unlikely decision to enter the sectionals, is over for Troy High's women's basketball team, after getting blown out of the gym yet again on Friday.

Coach Steve Lombard missed the game, and it is unclear why. Either he was ill, or it could be something else entirely. As of press time, nothing has been reported on Lombard's status going forward. The smart move here for AD Paul Reinisch is to end it right here, rather than risk further traumatizing the team.

At least the JV women were a little more competitive in losing to Bethlehem.

Meanwhile, the men's team, under John Killian, has dropped 4 in a row, and 5 of 7, after falling to Goshen, 81-56, on Saturday.Stetson Merritt led the Flying Horses with 20 points. Terrence Clark added 16 points, and Damarion Tucker chipped in 12.

What has gone wrong for the Troy men?

Part of it could be psychological in nature, related to the departure, at least for the season, of junior Daniel Covington due to what can only be described as "off the court issues". Covington had been one of the best players on the team the last two seasons, and his continued absence hurts the team more than they're willing to let on. Troy will close out its regular season tonight at Utica Academy of Science needing to win and build momentum for the sectionals, which start later this week. A win tonight also puts the Flying Horses at .500 (10-10) for the season.

Tonight, then, is a barometer of how the Horses will finish the season.
