News & notes

UAlbany was supposed to play UMBC at Joe Bruno Stadium on Friday. However, the forecast for today called for what was originally a post-season winter mix of rain & snow, so the game was moved across the river to UAlbany's campus field, as part of a doubleheader, with today's game being played on Friday as well.

The Retrievers said, thank you very much, and swept the Great Danes, 10-8 and 14-7. UAlbany should have the tarp on the field today with the rain (no snow) for tomorrow's series finale.

Similarly, RPI moved today's game vs. Skidmore to Friday as well, and the Engineers ended up getting swept by the Thoroughbreds, 11-4 & 13-7.

Siena was blanked by Fairfield, 11-0, and will play a doubleheader tomorrow.

Troy High opened its 2023 softball season in grand style Friday, blowing out Catholic Central, 12-0, in 5 innings, as the mercy rule took effect.

Senior ace Olivia DeCitise twirled a no-hitter, fanning 9. The Lady Horses will be right back at home Thursday---weather permitting, naturally----in another non-league game, this time vs. Glens Falls, scheduled for a 5 pm start.

We're finding out what may be the root cause of Brett Young's struggles at George Washington.

Turns out that Brett has been dealing with a back injury, and that is why he was back on the bench this week after playing a couple of games last week. The Colonials are currently playing Manhattan as we write, with a doubleheader set for tomorrow after Friday's game was rained out. Once he's cleared to play, maybe Brett can finally end the slump he's been in.

Other 518 alumni news: The basketball season is over at Rhode Island, as they were eliminated from the Women's NIT Thursday in a loss to Harvard. Sophie Phillips (Cambridge) led all scorers with 20 points. Dolly Cairns (Saratoga) was held scoreless in 15 minutes.

Andre Jackson and UConn will be on the court tonight vs. Gonzaga, vying for a spot in next week's Final Four after crushing Arkansas on Thursday. However, the team bus was broken into, and a number of items were stolen. Now, what kind of pathetic losers would raid a college basketball team's bus? People looking for something to sell for quick cash. The best catharsis for the Huskies, of course, is winning it all come April 3.
