News & notes

You might know that the NFL's Green Bay Packers are a community owned franchise, where the citizens of Green Bay are shareholders.

The next best thing would be in the TBL, where the St. Louis Griffins are owned by a small town mayor and his wife. The mayor, Nate Griffin, is also the team's coach, and is the mayor of suburban Wellston, Missouri, which just got put on the map thanks to a feature piece on Griffin prior to Sunday's game vs. the Albany Patroons.

Now, Griffin is in a position to bring home a TBL title after his squad ousted the Patroons, 95-93, Monday at the Armory. The two teams did not meet during the regular season, and that unfamiliarity ultimately worked in Griffin's favor. Next season might be a different story.

The Troy Haymakers can't buy a break in the Albany Twilight League.

After losing their first six games this season, the Haymakers finally won a game on June 12, beating Waterford. However, they've now dropped two straight in the last two days, losing to the Capital City Kings, 2-1, on Sunday, and, then, last night, Twin Town beat Troy, 16-10, with both games at Bleecker Stadium. The Kings & Haymakers meet again tonight at 7:15. The Kings, by the way, saw their win streak snapped by Waterford last night at Kelts Stadium, 7-6.

The Saugerties Stallions still have the Albany Dutchmen's number.

After losing on Thursday, the Stallions returned to Guilderland Monday, and beat Albany, 5-2. The scene shifts to Saugerties tonight, and the teams are scheduled to play again this weekend, weather permitting.
