News & notes

You'll notice that Albany Academy's men's basketball team will not be playing in the sectionals, which begin for the men next week. Academy traditionally waits for the Federation Tournament of Champions, which follows the state tournament, but there is no Federation tournament this year.

Still, Academy finished the Section II portion of its schedule Thursday in dispatching CBA, 77-51, in a makeup game from last month at Siena's UHY Center. The Cadets are 14-4 overall, while CBA dips to 10-10. Albany Academy plays more of an independent schedule, and have 4 games left.

Meanwhile, Siena's women's team saw their 7 game winning streak snapped at Niagara, 84-70. Anaja Brown led 4 Saints in double figures with 22 points. Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) finished with just 7 points. Siena wraps up the Western NY trip Saturday at Canisius (WVCR, 1 pm).

Boxing fans in the 518 looking for something to watch should tune to ESPN's Top Rank Boxing tonight at 9. Albany's Abraham Nova challenges O'Shaquie Foster for the WBC Junior Lightweight title at Madison Square Garden. Best wishes to Nova heading into the fight.

UAlbany's women's basketball team has won three straight after coming from behind to beat NJIT, 38-36, on Thursday. Kayla Cooper was the lone Lady Dane in double figures with 19 points. Meaghan Huerter (Shenendehowa) is still out with an injury. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) contributed 3 points in 23 minutes. Abby Ray (Saratoga) did not score in 18 minutes. The ladies return home tomorrow on Breast Cancer Awareness Night vs. UMBC.
