News & notes

While I am not privy to overnight Nielsen ratings, I'd imagine that Saturday's NCAA women's basketball doubleheader on ABC outpointed the launch of the UFL on Fox.

Nearly 14,000 fans in Albany were treated to a pair of games that did leave some room for doubt, but that doubt was washed away by the time each game had ended.

In Saturday's opener, LSU and coach Kim Mulkey, ignoring a Washington Post profile on Mulkey, defeated UCLA, 78-69. Flau'jae Johnson led the Tigers with 12 points, and Angel Reese, who had been the most celebrated women's player in the country until Caitlin Clark came along, added 11.

In the nightcap, Clark led all 5 Iowa starters in double figures with 29 points, and added 15 assists, as the Hawkeyes, dismissed Colorado, 89-68, pulling away in the 2nd half after leading, 48-35, at halftime. Shelomi Sanders, daughter of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders, did not play due to a coach's decision.

Iowa & LSU, who met in the women's title game a year ago, will meet tomorrow to decide who advances to the Final Four (ESPN, 7 pm). If Iowa loses, Clark will join the US Olympic women's team.
