Down the stretch with Troy High

Hard to believe, but the spring sports regular season will end in the next few days. For some Troy High sports teams, the end can't come too soon.

For flag football (5-3), the schedule has been changed so that the Lady Horses' final three games are all this week. They'll travel to play Shaker on Monday, host Albany on Wednesday, and close with Saratoga on Thursday.

How did that happen?

I think that when Section II drew up the schedule, someone forgot when the regular season was supposed to end, so figure sectionals will begin the week of May 13. Troy won't win a regular season title, but could spoil things for Albany, which knocked Niskayuna from the undefeated ranks on Friday night, and, thus, holds the tiebreaker for the league title.

Because there are no online outlets where we can find the standings, we can only hope that Troy, with one more win, can clinch a playoff berth.

The wheels appear to have fallen off for Sean Geisel's softball team, which has dropped four straight, starting with the 2nd game of a doubleheader vs. Schuylerville on April 27. The schedule this week has been lightened, with non-league games against Amsterdam & Catholic Central (Holy Trinity) cancelled. One must assume those teams have to make up league games previously postponed by rainouts. As a result, instead of playing 5 games in as many days, Troy will play their standard three games this week. They'll host Bethlehem for Senior Day on Monday, then hit the road to play Niskayuna (Wednesday) & Columbia (Friday), needing a win or two to keep hope alive for a post-season berth.

Men's lacrosse has not won a game yet this season (0-11), routinely getting blown out. They have four games left, two of them at home under the lights against Albany on Monday, and then, Senior Night vs. Schenectady-Mohonasen on May 13, before closing at Columbia on May 14. There is a game listed as TBD May 11 at Tamarac, which would be the likely opponent.

Baseball under 1st year coach Trevor McCarthy has been painful to read about.

Troy snapped a 4 game losing streak in beating Burnt Hills on May 1, but promptly got blown out by Shaker the very next day. Friday's game vs. Averill Park has not been reported as of press time,

Four games remain for the Flying Horses. They'll be home for Bethlehem tomorrow, then road games at Niskayuna & Columbia before finishing at home with a non-league game vs. Schalmont on Saturday. Like the softball team, Troy needs some wins to make the post-season, otherwise they'll be out of the sectionals for the 2nd straight season. That means the Horses have to win out, but they've had trouble stringing wins together to this point.

Again, sectionals begin the week of May 13. Men's lacrosse would be well advised not to accept a bid, which would amount to a participation trophy. The weather, on the other hand, doesn't favor baseball or softball, with rain in the current forecast for most of the week. Let's just pray the rain stays away, and our teams can play.
