News & notes

WNYT's Rodger Wyland, writing in today's Albany Times-Union, is of the belief that there won't be a game between the Albany Firebirds and Philadelphia Soul on Sunday. As reported yesterday, Firebirds management has said a replacement has been lined up for the 1 pm game.

Just the same, WROW is giving away tickets to the game, still advertised as Philadelphia at Albany, during Magic in The Morning as of today. Host Ben Patten admitted they were hoping the game will be played, but the tickets, I think, will be honored in the event of a replacement opponent.

To clarify from yesterday, Columbia shut out Troy, 9-0, in the softball regular season finale for both clubs. Even 518 Softball was late in posting the result. Sectional pairings will be out later today.

The Times-Union's Joyce Bassett is reporting that the sectional finals for flag football will be played at Troy High next Monday, May 20, and Thursday, May 23. Pairings should be made public, perhaps as early as today. Burnt Hills, billed as a small school, will play Albany Leadership for the Division 2 title, while the other 10 teams vie for Division 1. Stay tuned.

Regular season play in baseball & softball should be wrapping up today, weather permitting. By the time Albany, Shenendehowa, Bethlehem, & Saratoga take the field in softball, they'll know what awaits in the sectionals.

The Tri-City Valleycats got 3 runs in the 10th, and made it stand up to beat Windy City, 8-5, on Sunday. The 'Cats (2-1) move on to play Schaumburg tonight. Yes, they're playing on Mondays in the Frontier League this year, meaning Thursday will be a travel day for Tri-City.

Siena & UAlbany's softball teams are headed deep in the heart of Texas.

Both teams will play their opening round games starting Friday. Siena will play the Longhorns in a regional in Austin that will also include Northwestern (Big 10) & St. Francis of Pennsylvania.

UAlbany will play Texas A & M (SEC), with Texas State & Penn State (Big 10) rounding out the College Station regional.

The Albany-A & M game could wind up on the SEC network (Spectrum channel 370), so check your cable guides.
