News & notes

You have to go back to October 2022 for the last time Troy High won a football game. They just missed the playoffs, and lost to Guilderland in a non-conference crossover to finish the season 4-5.

After a winless 2023 campaign, second year coach Jordan Canzeri knew he needed to get off to a fast start. Johnstown provided the tonic on Friday night at Picken Field, as Troy snapped a 9 game losing streak with a 29-6 win.

Spectrum News 1 & Albany Times-Union high school analyst James Allen predicted Troy would win just 2 games this year. Troy hits the road for a 2 game trip starting this Friday at Mohonasen, which lost its opener, 36-22, to Scotia. Unfortunately, the box score of the Johnstown game is not in today's paper.

LaSalle pushed back its football home opener to Saturday due to a scheduling conflict, which only prolonged the inevitable for Our Lady of Lourdes (Section 9), as John Audino's club opened with a 28-8 win at home. Have to believe the scheduling issue on Friday had something to do with LaSalle's men's soccer team, which beat South Glens Falls, but lost to Queensbury on Saturday, unless we hear something different.

UAlbany had a road trip to forget Saturday night, losing to West Virginia, 49-14. The loss wrapped up a putrid 3 days of games for local teams, which started with RPI's loss on Thursday.

In between, Union was blown out at Utica, 42-26.

There's always next week.
