Time to go Bowling

It's Super Bowl weekend in Section II. Five games across a 24 hour period. Two games will air on TV. The rest you could likely stream. Here we go:

Class AA:

Shaker vs. CBA @ Troy High (Spectrum News 1, 7 pm). Shaker coach Greg Sheeler is wishing this game wasn't being played in Troy. No, I'm not kidding. The last time he faced off with CBA coach Bob Burns with stakes as high as this, Troy defeated Shaker in what amounted to a de facto home game for the Flying Horses, with the game just down the street at RPI's East Campus Village Stadium. Burns owns one of the best, if not THE best, winning percentages in Section II history, and a large chunk of that was built over six seasons at Troy, where losses were rare at the time.

For the 2nd straight year, the AA Super Bowl is being played in Burns' old home at Picken Memorial Field. That's bad news for Shaker. If the Bison don't get out to a fast start against the Brothers, it's over.

Pick: CBA.

Class C:

Schuylerville vs. Cobleskill-Richmondville @ Lansingburgh. The Bulldogs are familiar with the Lansingburgh field, but not for football. They used to play soccer here as a member of the Colonial Council until jumping to the Western Athletic Conference this year. They're undefeated, same as CBA, and the next chapter of their Cinderella story comes tonight.

Schuylerville, however, sent a loud message in demolishing Fonda-Fultonville last week. The Black Horses are looking to put the Bulldogs under their learning tree.

Pick: Schuylerville.

Saturday:

Class D:

Cambridge-Salem vs. Greenwich @ Schuylerville. Would we have had this game if Bolton-Warrensburg-Lake George didn't have a case of Beavisitis on a bus? Hard to say. You know what they say. When one door closes, another opens, and Cambridge-Salem is overdue to return to the promised land.

Pick: Cambridge-Salem.

Class B:

Ravena vs. Glens Falls @ Shenendehowa. First half of a doubleheader at Steuerwald Stadium. The championship pedigrees between these two teams would be worth putting this on TV as well. Ravena is the defending champion. Glens Falls is back in the title game for the first time since the Joe Girard III era. You know former Ravena coach Gary VanDerzee will be watching this one, hoping for a repeat. It's not happening.

Pick: Glens Falls.

Class A:

Averill Park vs. Burnt Hills (Spectrum News 1, 4:30). Kevin DeBonis' Spartans have won 8 in a row to get here after starting 0-2. Averill Park's Zach Gobel would like to finally win the big one, especially for a talented senior class led by Jacob Phelps. Sorry, Zach, this ain't the year. Burnt Hills is all kinds of hot right now, as they usually are around this time of year. They just need to figure out how to win a state title.

Pick: Burnt Hills.

Of course, I could be wrong.
