News & notes

For whatever reason, game 2 of the TBL playoff between the Capital Seahawks & Albany Patroons was moved to today at 3 pm, with game 3, if needed, tomorrow at 7 pm, both at the Washington Avenue Armory. Apparently, there were some issues preventing the Seahawks from arriving in Albany on Saturday.

The Tri-City Valleycats defeated Lake Erie, 9-2, on Saturday, and will go for the sweep today at 2 pm. Jake Reinisch saw his average rise to .313 with his effort in the game.

Athletes Unlimited launched its pro softball league Saturday night, but it was not a good night for Ana Gold (Ballston Spa/Duke) and the Blaze, who fell to the Volts, 5-1, in 8 innings. Gold was solid on defense, but was 0-2 at the plate before being pinch hit for in the 7th inning. The Volts plated 4 runs in the 8th, capped with a 3 run homer by McKenzie Clark.

Sovereignty won the Belmont Stakes Saturday night at Saratoga, joining the Triple Crown 2/3 club. Sovereignty will likely return to Saratoga for another big race, and a 3rd meeting with Preakness winner Journalism.

Trainer Bill Mott and Sovereignty's owners valued long term physical health over financial gains in the Triple Crown, and the strategy paid off here.
