As the season winds down.....

 Time to take another look at winter sports at Troy High, and, this time, also at LaSalle.

Troy High:

Men's swimming & diving (combined with CBA):

Current record: 4-3.

The season ends today at Niskayuna. Jeff Maxwell's squad is assured of finishing at least at .500. Sectionals start, I believe, next week, if not sooner.

Bowling:

Final regular season record: 7-7.

The Flying Horses will take part in the Suburban Council championships tomorrow at Boulevard Bowl. According to Aktivate, the tournament match postponed from last week is set for next Tuesday, also at Boulevard Bowl. We'll see.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 9-7.

John Killian's club has four, not three, games remaining, as they've rescheduled a non-league game vs. the Utica Academy of Science. Originally scheduled for Zotto Gym on December 17, the game has been moved to UAS' gym, next Monday at 7 pm. Troy will play three of the four games on the road, starting tonight at CBA. Senior Night is Friday vs. a red hot Bethlehem team that has won 9 straight headed into play tonight. Venerable coach AG Irons won his 200th career game on January 27 in the midst of the streak, and he has had Troy's number over the years.

The Flying Horses finish at Goshen on Saturday, and UAS on Monday.

Women's basketball:

Mercifully, the season ends Friday at Bethlehem. Kim Wise's Eagles routed Troy at Zotto Gym on January 4, and everyone expects more of the same on Friday. The only buzz with the Lady Horses is whether or not 1st year coach Steve Lombard is retained for next season after a historically horrid 2022-3 campaign.

Projected finish: 1-19.

LaSalle:

Men's basketball:

Current record: 10-8.

Greg Davis' club finishes the regular season tonight at Ichabod Crane. A strong showing will go a long way toward determining seeding for the sectionals, which begin February 16.

Hockey:

Current record: 6-6 CDHSHL, 9-8-1 overall.

Two games remain for Tim Flanigan's squad. Senior Night is Friday vs. a luckless Albany Academy team that LaSalle beat last month on the road. The Cadets will close at Bethlehem on Saturday, but likely will get a spot in a play-in tournament a week later.

Projected finish: 7-7 (10-9-1).

Rivalry day (LaSalle @ CBA, hockey, 2/4/23)

 During football season, Christian Brothers Academy & LaSalle meet for the Sabre just about every year. Still, the rivalry will draw big crowds no matter where these two teams meet.

Such was the case at the Albany County Training Facility tonight, with the Cadets in town, looking for a season sweep of the Brothers. Given CBA's poor record this season under 1st year coach Aiden Melrose, the bleachers had a decided LaSalle advantage.

Chase Rose put the visitors on top in the 1st period, adding to his team lead in goals & points. The Cadets added a goal before the end of the period, and after CBA finally got on the board in the 3rd, LaSalle answered with an insurance goal, getting back above .500 with a 3-1 win.

Earlier in the day, CBA defeated LaSalle in a non-league basketball game, 85-67, so today wasn't a total loss for the Brothers.

 Former UAlbany player Matt Cerutti has landed his first pro contract, with the Wichita Sky Kings of The Basketball League, but don't look for Cerutti to be returning to Albany any time soon, unless the Sky Kings play the Patroons in the playoffs.

TBL scheduling doesn't allow for crossover games between the Eastern & Western Conferences, unlike the NHL & NBA. If that's their idea of being an alternative, they need help in the creative department.

Union College is thinking about retiring "Dutchmen" as the team nickname. The school acknowledges that the Dutch settled in this area after the Native Americans had already settled, and are looking to avoid any future conflicts. There won't be any knee-jerk reactions in high schools, unlike the forfeiture of Native American team nicknames and images.

 It's bitter cold in the 518, with temperatures below zero tonight, but the action was hot at Niskayuna High, as the Silver Warriors hosted Troy. For the 2nd straight week, a last second shot did in the Flying Horses, as Sam Booth tapped in the game winner with 7 seconds remaining to give Niskayuna a 53-52 win.

Word from Troy High, via their Twitter page, is that their bowling team finished the regular season at 7-7, meaning that they won the tiebreaker over Shenendehowa when the two teams finished in a tie the other day.

 The Tri-City Valleycats made it official a week ago, as they're bringing back Frontier League HR champion Denis Phipps for his 3rd season in Troy. Phipps smashed the team record for homers in a season, and gives the 'Cats a base around which to build their offense for this season.

Is there room for a 2nd arena football team in Albany?

The Arena Football League, which disbanded after the 2019 season, is being revived this year, with an eye toward a 2024 launch with as many as possibly 16 teams. League officials are interested in putting a team in Albany, but the Empire, the last AFL champions before the dissolution of the old league, are the 2-time defending National Arena League champions, and have no plans to jump back. The Empire begins their season in April.

It might be in the best interest of UAlbany to cut bait on Dwayne Killings, given his legal issues.

The Great Danes dropped their 6th straight, 66-50, to UMass-Lowell Wednesday night. As the losses mount, so do the distractions. Gerald Drumgoole, Jr. led Albany with 18 points, as the Danes fall to 1-8 in America East play, leaving them in last place, heading into a home game with arch-rival Vermont on Saturday.
