 UAlbany rewarded football coach Greg Gattuso wih a 2 year contract extension through the 2026 season, which, Gattuso hinted at a presser on Wednesday, may be his final season. The Great Danes had a phenomenal 2023 season, reaching the FCS semi-finals. They have CBA's Donald Jones coming in this fall, and where he'll fit into the offense remains to be seen.

Catholic Central star Darien Moore, the morning after dropping 41 on Ichabod Crane, announced that he will play his college ball at Seton Hall (Big East). Moore is just a sophomore, and a key part of Guy DiBacco's offense for the Crusaders. He'll have two more years with the varsity before going to New Jersey in 2026.

The College of St. Rose's women's basketball team got back on the winning track Wednesday, crushing St. Michael's, 76-35, in Vermont. Maddisyn Mahoney (Shaker) led the Golden Knights with 25 points. Payton Graber (Schalmont) added 16. and Syrita Faraj (Tamarac) chipped in with 15. Next up is a home game vs. American International on Saturday.

UAlbany's women's basketball team hosts Binghamton this morning at 11 am for a matinee. Unfortunately, the Lady Danes don't have a radio contract, unlike the men, so we'll be waiting for the results later on.

Checking stats from Tuesday's Colonie-Troy men's basketball game. The Merritt brothers, Stetson & Legend, continue to be a 2-man offense for Troy, as they combined for 34 points (24 for Stetson, 10 for Legend). Cam Trimarchi, whose sister, Ella, led the Lady Raiders past Troy, led Colonie with 16 points, while Julius Reed & Ryan Klouse had 15 each. Troy is off until Monday, when they close with Senior Night vs. Guilderland.

Turns out Daniel Covington wasn't the only one to leave Troy for greener pastures.

Terrance Clark transferred to Mekeel Christian Academy, and led all scorers with 31 points on Wednesday. However, a 4th quarter 20-2 run was not enough, as Albany Academy downed the Lions, 69-63.

Section II confirmed Wednesday that there will be a 12 team women's flag football league, kicking off on April 10. All but 1 of the teams will be from the Suburban Council, which will be represented by Troy, Bethlehem, Albany, Burnt Hills, Columbia, Colonie, Niskayuna, Saratoga, Schenectady, Shaker, & Shenendehowa.

Albany Leadership, out of the Patroon Conference, rounds out the field. There will be sectionals, and the state championships will be contested June 2 at SUNY-Cortland. We should have the schedule for Troy soon.

Behind a game high 22 points from Kate Gilooly, LaSalle routed Voorheesville, 57-35, holding the Lady Blackbirds to 5 points in the 4th quarter to put the game away. Check the video:

News & notes

 For a time in the 90's, he was one of us.

Texas native Anthony Weaver played his high school football at Saratoga, then went to Notre Dame before being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2002. Weaver spent 4 seasons in Baltimore, then finished his playing career back in Texas with the Houston Texans before moving into coaching.

This is significant after it was announced late last week that Weaver has signed on as a defensive coordinator with the Miami Dolphins for the 2024 season. He was one of those rare cases of a Section II kid who made the big time, and stuck. Congratulations, Anthony.

In another case of the media missing an obvious story, Greg Davis returns to Troy High tonight for his first game as a visiting coach when his undefeated Colonie Garnet Raiders face the Flying Horses. Davis won a Suburban Council Grey division title & a Class A title at Troy in 2019, only for the Horses to fall to 4th place the following season, resulting in his being let go after the season. After three seasons at LaSalle, Davis moved to Colonie last offseason after the retirement of Jon Dagostino created an opening. Knowing El Cheapo Media like I do, they're whiffing on the story like everyone else, even though they would have the hometown angle to work.

Do I think Troy can pull the upset? No. It will be a competitive game, and Troy will have their hands full with Colonie star Julius Reed, while Davis will follow where others left off, and force Troy to rely heavily on the Merritt brothers, Stetson & Legend, to carry the offense. The Merritts had a combined 57 points in the loss to Columbia on Friday.

Win or lose, Troy will have a few days off before closing the season with a non-league rematch vs. Guilderland next Monday.

Boulevard Bowl hosts the Suburban Council championships tomorrow. Ignore the listing of Troy at Columbia in today's papers. That match was moved up, and took place a couple of weeks ago, with Columbia winning, as we reported. The match was moved up to give the teams some extra time off before the league championships.

 Michael Eley returned from a hamstring injury and scored 24 points, but the skidding Siena Saints dropped their 6th straight, a 68-61 loss to Mount St. Mary's spoiling Hall of Fame Day at MVP Arena.

On a day when recent stars like Edwin Ubiles & Brett Bisping were being inducted into the Saints' Hall of Fame, Athletic Director John D'Argenio gave coach Carmen Maciariello the dreaded vote of confidence, saying that "Coach Carm" will be back next year. A miracle run in next month's MAAC tournament in Atlantic City might help administration's final decision.

In stark contrast to the packed house today, LaSalle's women drew maybe 1/3 of that size in beating Ravena, 48-35. Kate Gilooly & Moira Galuski had 17 points each to lead the Lady Cadets, who will host Cobleskill-Richmondville tomorrow night.

It was not a good weekend overall for Shen.

On Friday, the basketball teams were swept by Bethlehem. The men have been up & down this season, but the women had looked like world beaters until Friday. Leading scorer Gabby Stuart was held to 11 points, while unheralded Katherine Barrigan had a game high 19 points for the Eagles. Kaitlyn Robbins returned, and chipped in with 4 points, Caroline Davis added 10, and Paige Davenport had 16, as the Eagles pulled the upset, 56-44. On the men's side, the Plainsmen were held to 4 points in the 4th quarter to force overtime, and could only tally 4 more in the extra session to fall, 56-55.

In Troy's loss to Columbia on Friday, Stetson Merritt had a game high 36 points, while brother Legend added 21. Kayne Behan had the other 4. The women's game still has not been reported, and neither has the Thursday swim meet vs. Shaker.

UAlbany's baseball team opens its season in 3 weeks on the road at Tennessee. The following week, the road leads to George Washington University in Virginia (not Washington, DC, as listed on the UAlbany schedule), where they'll likely see former Siena infielder Brett Young (now a senior at GWU), whose 2023 season was cut short by injury. We'll see if there's a way the games can be streamed the series comes up in 4 weeks.

 Not advertised in the papers on Thursday was a non-league women's basketball matchup between Greenville (Patroon Conference) and homestanding LaSalle (Colonial Council). We should have full stats tomorrow for this one, but the growing pains for the 1st year varsity program in women's hoops at LaSalle continue......

Greenville won handily, 57-32, and will host Troy next Thursday. LaSalle was to play Ravena tonight at Ravena, but the game has been moved to McCormick Hall at LaSalle for tomorrow at 3 pm. No reason given for the switch.

Vermont shut down two of UAlbany's Big Three, and that was enough to hand the Great Danes yet another loss to the Catamounts. Jonathan Beagle (Hudson Falls) had just 2 points. Sebastian Thomas was held to 4. Amare Marshall led Albany with 20 points, as Vermont prevailed, 82-59.

Back in Albany, Vermont made it a sweep, with a 64-59 victory, ending the Lady Danes' 14 game winning streak. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) was held scoreless in 15 minutes. Deja Evans led Albany with 21 points. Meghan Huerter (Shen/Providence) had just 6 points, and Abby Ray (Saratoga) chipped in with 3. It's off to UMBC for the Lady Danes tomorrow, while the men are home.

Meanwhile, Siena placed 4 players in double figures, led by Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) & Elisa Mevius with 15 each, as they avenged a loss last month to Manhattan, blowing out the Lady Jaspers, 74-51. The Lady Saints travel to Marist tomorrow.

 CBA's Donald Jones has committed to UAlbany to play football next season. Jones, who was a kick returner, defensive back, running back, quarterback, & wide receiver at CBA, will have choose which position he'll play this fall. Younger brother Archie, a sophomore, will compete for the starting QB job with CBA in training camp this summer.

Someone needs to tell WROW morning host Ben Patten to give the women's basketball teams at UAlbany & Siena some love.

Patten is plugging the men's game tonight between UAlbany & Vermont, but has so far ignored the women, who've won 14 straight heading into tonight's home game at Broadview Center vs. Vermont. Patten only reads the women's scores during the postseason, which is doing the schools a complete disservice.

Notes from Tuesday's Troy-Niskayuna basketball games.

On the women's side, Amaya Harris was the lone Troy player in double figures with 10. Troy failed to crack double figures in any quarter, as Nisky never relented with the full court pressure. As for the guys, the Merritt brothers didn't get much help again. Stetson Merritt had a game high 31 points, while Legend added 13. Troy was held to 16 points in the 1st half before making a run to outscore Nisky, 19-9, in the 3rd quarter before Nisky pulled away in the final frame.
