Sectional roundup, 2/24

Bethlehem repeated as Section II Division I champions in hockey as they downed Shenendehowa 4-2, on Sunday night at Union College. Now, it's on to the state tournament for the Eagles, who were eliminated in the first round of state play last year.
====================================
Class A boys basketball took over Hudson Valley Community College's Ed McDonough Field House on Sunday with a quadruple-header. Defending Class A champ Mohonasen, now representing the Colonial Council, beat Averill Park, 62-57. Chase Monroe had a game high 22 points for the Mighty Warriors.

Last year's Class B champs, Mekeel Christian Academy, having played an independent schedule after leaving the Western Athletic Conference (sounds like they did the same thing Emma Willard did on the women's side, leaving their league at the last minute), beat Lansingburgh, 66-61. That's the good news for the Lions. The bad news? They get top seeded Troy High next, and, oh, did the Flying Horses enjoy the home cooking at HVCC, or what? Virtually every man on the active roster got into the game and scored against Queensbury. Nazaire Merritt led Troy with 18 points, Latyce Faison added 15, and Troy blew away the Spartans, 87-51. Ouch!

Troy's the only Suburban Council team left in Class A, as Gloversville, like Queensbury a Foothills Council rep, beat Ballston Spa, 52-44.

The semi-finals, then, are set for Thursday at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls:

Gloversville vs. Mohonasen.
Mekeel Christian vs. Troy.

If yesterday told us anything at all, the only sure thing on Thursday is that there is no sure thing. Mekeel & Troy will play for the first time ever, for example, and that could make all the difference in the world.
