News & notes

Try figuring this one out.

LaSalle was dropped from Class AA to Class A in all sports except basketball and lacrosse after last season. Since there is no Class AA in lacrosse, the Cadets must've been in Class B in the spring sport, like Troy High is.

However, LaSalle is in Class C as the top seed, and will host Scotia-Glenville Tuesday night at Sutton Field. Question is, will there be television cameras and/or newspaper reporters? LaSalle tends to get the Rodney Dangerfield treatment most nights.

Early morning rains on Sunday forced postponement of a softball game between Troy & Guilderland. They'll try again on Tuesday in what would be the season finale for both teams. Troy is supposed to have Senior Day today vs. Schenectady, but, as I write, it's raining again.

I get that the farmers benefit from all the rain, but we always get too much rain.

Meanwhile, the drainage system at Bruno Stadium allowed Cohoes & LaSalle to play baseball Sunday afternoon. It was originally meant to be a Cohoes home game, but it's really a de facto home game for the Cadets, who won, 9-1. The Tigers are at the bottom of the Colonial Council standings. and likely will miss the sectionals with just three wins on the season.

The Albany Empire keeps right on rolling.

The AFL leaders beat Columbus for the 2nd time in 3 weeks, spoiling the Destroyers' home opener, 56-40, on Saturday night.

Empire receiver Malachi Jones got a tryout with the NFL's Tennessee Titans during the run-up to the game. Hmmmm.

This last item has zero to do with sports in the 518, but then..........!

Troy Prep history teacher Conor Quinn placed second in the Jeopardy! 2019 Teachers Tournament on Friday night. Wolfe's Biergarten in Albany hosted a viewing party for the show, which drew cameras from WTEN, the local home of Jeopardy!, for the puff piece. For what it's worth, an RPI graduate now teaching in New Paltz, won first prize.

Anyone want to bet on Conor throwing out the first ball at a Valleycats game this summer?

Two nights later, Shaker High student Madison Vandenburg's dream run on American Idol came to a crashing end in the finals, as Madison placed third. And, yeah, I think the 'Cats will be calling her about singing the National Anthem, probably as soon as opening night next month, which happens to also be Father's Day.
