High School Fridays: Schenectady @ Troy (boys' basketball), 2/12/21

 Who were those masked men?

Taking their cues from a college game between Holy Cross and Boston College a few weeks back, Section II is mandating that all players, coaches, & referees will wear protective masks to guard against the spread of coronavirus this season.

Troy High began the 2nd Richard Hurley era in basketball this afternoon, hosting Schenectady High, and it was clear from the beginning that despite a week and a half of practices, there was still some rust on both sides. Hurley, back on the bench after 3 seasons away, was clearly frustrated during the first half, as Troy's zone pressure defense was leaving a lot of Patriots wide open for shots, but, thankfully, Schenectady wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders, either.

Just the same, the visitors had a 7 point lead at halftime, 31-24. Both teams were also having issues at the free throw line, which was a big difference.

Hurley gave his charges a pep talk at the break, and that woke up the Flying Horses, who held Schenectady to just 10 points in the 4th quarter as Troy began to pull away. The Patriots got sloppy on defense in the third quarter, and a disciplinary breakdown ensured Troy would spend a good chunk of the final frame at the charity stripe.

I don't have official numbers as far as individual scorers at present. I have to just guess. What I do know is that Troy placed four players in double figures, led by Shamdo Caldwell, who had, by my count, 17 points. We will update the scores when they become available. Troy used a 23-10 4th quarter to pull away, walking out with a 71-54 victory.

For the first time, Troy has a YouTube channel, operated by teacher Darryl Doty. Most schools are going this route to live-stream games this season, so check the action for yourselves, pilgrims, and mind the early f-bomb in the 1st quarter:

Troy goes on the road Tuesday, visiting Niskayuna, while the women will have their home opener. Both games are scheduled to tip at 6:15 pm.
