High School Fridays: Friday's scoreboard, 3/26

Troy High alumni & fans expecting to see Friday's home opener vs. Amsterdam had to deal with some unexpected complications.

Even though the school tested their YouTube stream in the outdoors earlier in the week, you can't prepare for adverse conditions with such equipment. It's not the same as simulating crowd noise in a domed stadium like, say for example, the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. What resulted was that you had nervous student volunteers who weren't completely prepared to handle either the stream or the game clocks. When the clock froze early in the 1st quarter, one student could be clearly heard calling out to the referee, "We're trying!" more than once. They knew ahead of time what the forecast was going to be, with wind and a threat of rain.

And so it was that after Troy scored its 1st touchdown, less than 2 minutes into the frame, the sound was cut off, and would remain that way until the latter part of the game, by which point Troy had already put the game away. Senior tailback Xavier Leigh ran for 2 touchdowns, and caught 2 TD passes from Alex Wolfe. Tyrell Penalba picked an Amsterdam runner's pocket---literally----and rumbled 73 yards to the house. Troy goes to 2-0 with a 55-6 demolition of the Rams (0-1).

The good news for Troy fans is that the state Department of Health has adjusted COVID guidances, so that less than 200 fans will be admitted into Picken Field for future games, likely starting Thursday vs. Averill Park. Speaking of the Warriors, they went to 2-0 as well, setting up a 1st place showdown by shutting out Albany on the road, 42-0.
