News & notes

Saratoga's Bobby Fish will be back on your TV screens in a week's time.

Fish, released by WWE earlier this summer, will appear on All Elite Wrestling's Dynamite from Philadelphia on October 6 to challenge newly crowned TNT champion Sammy Guevara. Fish is also taking part in Major League Wrestling's Opera Cup tournament. MLW's show, Fusion, is available on YouTube on Wednesdays.
==========================================
Unfortunately for 518 fans, Atlanta Braves pitcher Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) will make his final start of the regular season tonight vs. Philadelphia. Not sure if MLB Network will pick up the game, considering the division title and playoff implications involved. First pitch is set for 7:20 pm in Atlanta. We say unfortunately, because it had been assumed at this desk that Anderson would get one more start against the Mets this weekend. A win tonight, and Atlanta clinches its 4th straight NL East title.

News & notes

While Troy High has been struggling on the football field so far this season under first-year coach John Barber, it wasn't the only coaching change at the old barn.

Troy quietly changed varsity women's soccer coaches, too. Science teacher Justin Haviland stepped down, and physical education teacher Janine Turcio was quietly hired to take his place. The results have been the same as the football team to this point.

While the football Flying Horses finally scored some points in a road loss to Averill Park (they've been outscored 130-6 in three games), the women's soccer team hasn't scored a point. Tuesday's home match vs. Albany was not reported to the press, a sign that they didn't want to further traumatize the team. Likewise, their home volleyball match vs. the Falcons was not reported in time for today's deadlines. What other rational reason could there be?

Update, 9:55 am: Schedule Galaxy reports that the women's soccer team snapped its losing streak, giving Coach Turcio her first win. See below.

Update, 9/30/21, 11:07 am: Schedule Galaxy has posted that Troy defeated Albany in volleyball, 3-2, on Tuesday.

News & notes

The next time Derrick Rowland steps onto the court at the Washington Avenue Armory, it won't be as the coach of the Albany Patroons.

Rowland, an original Patroon, has signed to coach an expansion team owned by a Native American group in Oklahoma, the Potawatomi Fire, Son Derrick, Jr., currently a senior at New Haven, will join him after graduation.

In other Patroons news, Ben Fernandez, who co-owned the team back in the 80's, and has owned the Armory, has reacquired the team from Dr. Tim Maggs. General Manager Michael Corts has been promoted to Vice President, with Fernandez wearing the hats of owner and President. Maggs, a chiropractor based in Schenectady, will remain as a medical advisor.

Former UAlbany receiver Juwan Green could be seeing his first pro action today as he suits up for the Atlanta Falcons against the Giants. Green was signed by Atlanta earlier this week to shore up the position after injuries sidelined their starters.

The Freihofer's Run For Women returned to downtown Albany Saturday morning. Now, here's an event that deserves television coverage on a more consistent basis, but, of course, local stations can't be bothered with it.

Aisling Cuffe of Concord, Massachusetts crossed the finish line first. The highest finishing local runner was Cara Sherman (UAlbany/Mohonasen), who finished second.

It was another football-soccer doubleheader at RPI's East Campus Village Stadium on Saturday. COVID protocols, we must remind, prohibit fans from attending the games. Luckily, there is RPI TV, available on YouTube.

The day began with RPI crushing St. John Fisher, 41-7, giving up only a garbage time TD late in the second half, because, realistically, the game was over by halftime, with RPI leading, 34-0, at the break.

Here's the video:

Later in the day, RPI's women's soccer team shut out Bard, 6-0. Whitney Wisnom led the Lady Engineers with 2 goals.

Football:

Union keeps pace with RPI, running their record to 4-0 with a 30-9 win over Utica.

On the high school beat, Troy High's women's soccer team still hasn't scored a goal this season. Troy fell to 0-2 outside the Suburban Council, with both losses to Colonial Council squads, the latest being Cohoes, who beat Troy, 7-0, in the first half of a Homecoming soccer doubleheader. Speaking of doubleheaders, Troy will be part of another one next Saturday, as the men's & women's soccer teams will both be at Guilderland.

High School Fridays: Shaker @ Shenendehowa (football), 9/24/21

For almost a decade, Steuerwald Stadium at Shenendehowa High has been like a second home to the Blue Bison of Shaker High.

Going into tonight's game, the Bison had won four straight at Shen, dating back to the 2012 Class AA title game. The long time Suburban Council rivals entered this game undefeated, each opening the season 2-0. However, while Shaker has been impressive enough to merit a spot in the state's Top 25, Shenendehowa has found themselves behind the eight ball in the first half of their games.

Tonight was no different.

Shaker took the opening kickoff, and went straight to work.

Sophomore QB Jake Iacobaccio, on the first play from scrimmage, raced into Shen territory, and the Bison were already in position for a quick score. Just 79 seconds into the game, Porter Ninstant put the visitors on the board from a yard out.

While Shaker's defense frustrated the Plainsmen, the offense seemed to be unstoppable. With under 2 1/2 minutes left in the quarter, Donovan Deguire punched it in from 4 yards, and Shaker led, 14-0, after the 1st quarter. Just a couple of minutes into the 2nd quarter, Iacobaccio found Dwayne Newkirk, who fell into the end zone. Shen, held to 6 points total in the first two games in the first half, was down 21-0 at the break.

As the 3rd quarter began, it looked like Shen would make a run, just as they'd had the first two weeks. Senior QB Mason Courtney, who sat out the "Fall II" season in the spring, hit Luke McAuliffe for a 10 yard TD to cut the lead to 21-7 heading into the final quarter.

Iacobaccio proved to be human, absorbing three sacks in the second half, but after Pat House trimmed the Shaker lead to 21-14 with a 1 yard run, Iacobaccio took matters into his own hands. Literally. He ran for 29 yards to restore the lead to 14 at 28-14 with 2 1/2 minutes remaining, then iced it by picking off Courtney just a few seconds later. Two kneel-downs after that, and the Bison go to 3-0 with the 28-14 win.

Shaker will face Colonie for the Town of Colonie Cup next week, while Shen will play Bethlehem. The Eagles were blown out, 49-0, by Guilderland tonight.

Other scores:

Schuylerville def. Fonda-Fultonville, 14-7, in Class C.

In Class A, Burnt Hills, after changing plans late, downed LaSalle, 24-21. Troy High finally got a touchdown, but that was all, blown out by Averill Park, 46-6. LaSalle visits Columbia next week, while Troy is scheduled to host Albany. The Falcons had to cancel their game with LaSalle due to their players not being fully vaccinated.

A couple of changes to tonight's football schedule.

As we reported earlier this week, Albany was forced to cancel a home game vs. LaSalle due to not having all of their players fully vaccinated. They're hoping to open their season at Troy next Friday. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, coming off a blowout over Troy, will play LaSalle instead, and the game will be at LaSalle. The Spartans gave up a non-conference crossover road trip to Rush-Henrietta in Western NY as part of the deal.

Also, Lansingburgh is having COVID issues as well, and will not play Glens Falls tonight. Instead, Glens Falls will play Hoosick Falls-Tamarac.

News & notes

Chalk up another win for Shenendehowa grad Ian Anderson.

Anderson checked the Arizona Diamondbacks on one run and one hit, with eight strikeouts, over seven innings Wednesday, as the Atlanta Braves inched a step closer to their fourth straight NL East title with a 9-2 verdict. The way the schedule is set, it looks like Anderson will get one more start vs. the Mets in the final series of the season next weekend.
==========================================
Meanwhile, Shen has to deal with the reality of their boosters, and the school itself, being the victims of a long-distance scam.

According to the Albany Times-Union this morning, Shen AD Chris Culnan received a surprise delivery right at the start of the season in the form of two boxes of t-shirts that were not ordered by Culnan or any other Shen staffer.

A Texas man solicited a number of local businesses, according to the article, and some of these unsuspecting marks paid more than $1,000 each for what they thought was sponsorship of the Plainsmen's football team. Elite Sports Promos collected as much as $7,000 until, according to Elite's James Stevens, Culnan cancelled the contract, which Stevens claims was initiated by varsity cheerleading coach Amy Price, who denies any involvement at all.

Price, Culnan, and Shen Nation as a whole, were duped, and plan to spread the word to other schools in the area.

Lest we forget, Shen will be featured on Spectrum News 1's Friday Night Matchup tomorrow night vs. Shaker. The Blue Bison will be appearing on TV for the 2nd time in 3 weeks. Spectrum evening anchor Marisa Jacques is back roaming the sidelines on Fridays.

News & notes

According to today's Albany Times-Union, Albany High's football team has not yet seen the field as not all of the players have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

That means Friday's home game vs. LaSalle has been cancelled, and the Falcons are hoping to be ready to play Troy (0-2) on October 1 at Picken Field. What this means, of course, is LaSalle (1-1), coming off a win over Ballston Spa on Friday, is idle again. Albany County has one of the strictest regulations for vaccine mandates in Section II, and Albany High may be the only school in the county whose football team hasn't gotten with the program.

Stay tuned.
=======================================
Luckless Troy can't seem to catch a break.

The school's winless women's volleyball team hosted Catholic Central on Monday afternoon, and, while the result was not reported, the Crusaders' Twitter pages tells us that this match was, as far as they're concerned, a scrimmage, which the Crusaders won, 3-2.

Troy's non-league match vs. Lansingburgh on September 18 was not reported, either, and we're still waiting to find out about that. Troy had Monday's match listed on their Schedule Galaxy calendar as a normal, non-league, regular season match.

Also, the golf teams did not submit scores in losing to Shenendehowa on Monday at Frear Park. I get they're trying to avoid total embarrassment for how the season's gone so far, and golf season ends this week, but the horse left the barn a while ago.

It may only be the pre-season, but....!

When last we saw the Lady Engineers of RPI on the ice, they were finishing a dismal 2019-20 season without a single win.

With the regular season still a couple of weeks away at least, RPI's women's hockey team took to the ice at James Houston Field House Sunday afternoon for a pre-season game against Syracuse. You'd be forgiven if you thought, here we go again. Another loss.

With RPI's edict that no fans can attend games at any of the sports venues on campus, including the Field House, the Orange and the Engineers played a quick, relatively quiet game.

Yes, RPI finally won. Sure, it's only the pre-season, but there are signs that they could turn things around once the regular season starts next month. Amanda Rampado had 29 saves for RPI in the win.

Saturday's high school & college scoreboard, 9/18

We've seen Syracuse & UAlbany play against each other in lacrosse, soccer, & basketball over the years, and the Orange, for the most part, have had the Great Danes' number.

On Saturday, the two teams met in football at the Carrier Dome, and it was a one-sided affair in favor of the Orange, who ran over the Danes, 62-24. UAlbany (0-3) has a bye week before resuming league play on October 3.

A non-league volleyball match between Troy & Lansingburgh had not been reported as of press time.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake's women's volleyball may still be the queens of Section II, but their winning streak ended in a tournament in Pennsylvania on Saturday. In these tournament matches, it's a best of three instead of best of 5, as we're accustomed to.

That said, the Lady Spartans defeated Unionville in straight sets, but lost to Parkland, also in two straight sets. That will make Burnt Hills even more determined to claim another sectional title next month.
