News & notes

Tonight's game between Schenectady & LaSalle has been cancelled due to a COVID outbreak on the Patriots. LaSalle (0-1) will open Class A play next Friday vs. Ballston Spa.

The Tri-City Valleycats will indeed need to win out to ensure they clinch the Atlantic Division of the Frontier League this weekend. The 'Cats split a doubleheader with Sussex County on Thursday, leaving them a 1/2 game behind Equipe Quebec, which closes with a four game series vs. the Miners. Should Quebec & Tri-City finish in a tie, Tri-City would win the tiebreaker, having won 8 of 15 this season.

Meanwhile, the 'Cats had 4 players placed on the league All-Star team: DH Denis Phipps, closer Trey Cochran-Gill, and infielders Brad Zunica & Juan Silverio. Pretty impressive for a team in its first year in a new league.

Local sports fans were able to breathe a sigh of relief Thursday, as the Mets-Marlins game aired on WCWN, getting a nearly 2 hour headstart on the NFL opener. Seems the station did get some complaints about not carrying previous mid-week games when they were available via their shared feed with WPIX.

Unfortunately, the Mets lost again, 3-2.
