5 1/2 months ago, Jake Iacobaccio was a freshman quarterback-defensive back at CBA. Bob Burns was leading Troy to a Section II Class A title. Shaker was upset by Guilderland for the AA title.
Funny how things can suddenly change.
After the school year ended, Iacobaccio transferred to Shaker. Burns was hired by CBA, and brought with him assistants Jim Canfield & Sam Marro. Fullback-linebacker Jaylen Riggins followed them across the river by transferring from Troy for his senior season.
Tonight, Iacobaccio led Greg Sheeler's Blue Bison into battle at CBA on Spectrum News 1's Friday Night Matchup. Sheeler, while it wasn't a point of emphasis, had to be thinking revenge, as he had lost to Burns & Troy in 2016-17.
CBA took the opening kickoff, and marched down the field, but a defensive stop by Shaker halted the drive at the Bison 5. Shaker couldn't do anything, and punter Malcolm Robinson shanked one that landed at the 35. The Brothers grinded it out on the ground again with Brenden Simek and Donald Jones, ending with Jones running it in from 12 yards out for an early 7-0 lead.
Just 90 seconds later, Shaker answered with swift precision. Malachi Moore galloped home from 31 yards out, and we were tied at 7 after the first quarter, with the Bison driving again.
As the second quarter, Shaker took the lead in an ninstant. Porter Ninstant, that is, who ran it in from 11 yards out. However, the point after was blocked, and Shaker led, 13-7, at the break.
A little over halfway through the third quarter, Jones struck again, this time from 10 yards. However, the point after skewed wide, and we were tied at 13 heading into the final frame. Ninstant answered yet again, with just over a minute left in regulation, again from 10 yards out. Again, the point after was blocked. On the ensuing CBA possession, Jack Gregory's desperation heave was picked off. One kneel-down later, and CBA fell from the ranks of the undefeated. Shaker goes to 5-0 (4-0 Class AA) with a hard fought 19-13 win.
CBA, which had only allowed six points going in, ran into some of the same decision making issues that occasionally plagued Burns' teams at Troy. If they were any more conservative, Burns, a Rensselaer County Legislator, would cross party lines. Through six games (5-1 overall), the Brothers are averaging 39 points a game, down from 44.2 at the start of the evening. Their points against average, which was a microscopic 1.2 going in, went up to just over 4 points per game.
Other stuff: LaSalle downed Queensbury, 25-24, to run their record to 3-2.
Troy's women's tennis team ended its season in the first round of the sectionals with a 6-1 loss to Hudson Falls. Why did they even bother? Emma Willard, now in the Central Hudson Valley League, upset Columbia, 6-3.
