News & notes

To follow up on a recent story, former Troy High star Joe Casale is transferring from UAlbany to Robert Morris for next season as a graduate transfer. Casale has 2 years of athletic eligibility left, though academically, he may be graduating in the spring. Two former Great Danes assistants are now coaching at Robert Morris, which may have influenced Casale's decision.

In addition, assistant head coach Jim Sweeney is being let go after 8 seasons. The former Jets lineman may be getting scapegoated by UAlbany administration after a frustrating 2-9 season.

Siena College's women's team opened conference play Monday, but it was the same sad, old story.

The Lady Saints are now 0-9 (0-1 MAAC) under Jim Jabir following a 59-43 loss to Rider. The last non-conference game on the schedule comes Wednesday at the Carrier Dome vs. Syracuse. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) had 6 points in a losing effort for Siena.

We have been remiss in noting that Watervliet High has changed league affiliations in Section II. The Cannoneers have moved from the Colonial Council to the Patroon Conference. No reason has been given for the switch, and unlike when Troy, Schenectady, CBA, & Albany moved to the Suburban Council 6 years ago, this flew under the media radar.

The Tri-City Valleycats are among four minor league clubs filing an anti-trust suit against Major League Baseball pertaining to MLB's decision to disband the NY-Penn League and other minor leagues prior to the 2021 season. Stay tuned.
