B'ing champions

All that was missing from Sunday's state finals in Class B for the men & women were local stations committing to carrying the games.

CBS6 (WRGB)? Fuhgeddaboutit. They had the manufactured drama of the NCAA's. ABC10 (WTEN)? Nope. NBA and/or NHL on the schedule.

The point being, when you have some of the top teams in Section II playing for state titles, it wouldn't hurt to give them some love besides the usual highlight reels on the 6 & 11 pm news.

You had two teams, both from the Colonial Council, playing for state titles on Sunday, packing more drama than the NCAA could dream of.

Start with the women at Hudson Valley Community College. Less than 24 hours after Averill Park claimed the A title, Schalmont won their first-ever state title in Class B, holding off Waterloo, 56-54. Tournament MVP Payton Graber had 20 points, and Karissa Antoine added 17 to lead the Sabres. The box score appearing in today's papers is incorrect, giving some players more points than had actually earned. Editing errors, you know.

A few hours later in Glens Falls, Ichabod Crane completed the sweep for Section II and the Colonial Council in beating Friends Academy from Section VIII, 63-62. Brett Richards led the way for the Riders with 19 points, and was named tournament MVP. Again, the box score in the paper is incorrect.

Congratulations to both Ichabod Crane & Schalmont. Next season will be filed under "tough act to follow".
