News & notes

Space considerations are preventing the local papers from posting the schedule of today's high school sports events. After yesterday's rain, some games might not be played, so check with your schools to see if the games are being played after all.

Let me illustrate this another way. Troy High's softball team is scheduled to open the season with a 3 game non-league homestand, starting with Catholic Central, this afternoon. The game is listed on Schedule Galaxy, but not on the Crusaders' page on the Colonial Council website. In contrast, a game against Lansingburgh is on the Knights' page and on Schedule Galaxy.

Today's game, if it's played, coupled with a men's lacrosse game on April 2 at Picken Field, represent the final times we can say the Crusaders & Flying Horses would play for "bragging rights" to the city, as Catholic Central is relocating to Latham after the season.

MVP Arena is hosting the NCAA hockey regionals this week, with the semifinals having taken place last night. Games are airing on ESPN2 (Spectrum Cable channel 301).

Based on what's been reported, it seems local sports fans are more interested in the basketball tournament or pre-season baseball, as the crowd at the arena was rather small.

Notre Dame needed overtime to beat North Dakota, 2-1, while Minnesota State ousted Harvard, 4-3, which ends the ECAC's chances of winning a national title. The Mavericks & Fighting Irish will meet Saturday afternoon at 4 pm.
