News & notes

We told you that the Albany Patroons suffered their first loss of the season to Lehigh Valley on Sunday.

Four days later, coach-GM Will Brown wants that loss taken off the board. Not because the Legends themselves did anything wrong. Far from it. It has to do with the venue where the game was played.

A high school gym.

In an interview with Mark Singelais of the Albany Times-Union, appearing in today's editions after going online Thursday, Brown contends that the court was not properly configured according to The Basketball League's guidelines, shortening the 3 point arc, for example, and he intends to file a formal protest with the league.

What likely will kill the protest, in reality, is the simple fact that as we are in the middle of high school basketball's post-season here, so they are in Pennsylvania as well. A sectional or regional game might've been played within 24 hours of Sunday's game, and there might not have been enough time to properly prepare the gym for the game.

What Brown is looking for---and not likely to get---is for the result to be voided, making the game a no contest, to be rescheduled later in the season under proper conditions. With 44 teams in the league (!), these things are bound to happen.

The Patroons are back home to play Connecticut tonight. Pray for the Cobras.

After yesterday's piece spotlighting various Section II alumni playing in the NCAA tournament, it was not a good day for four of them. Everyone knows by now, of course, that Iowa was upset by Richmond. Freshman Riley Mulvey (Albany Academy) did not play. Former teammate Kieran O'Hare didn't play, either, as Providence was also upset, by South Dakota State.

Andre Jackson had six points as Connecticut fell to New Mexico State. Isaiah Powell (Colonie) was held to just 2 points as Vermont lost to Arkansas in Powell's final college game.

It's very discouraging to read that Siena's baseball team is off to a 2-12 start on the road. Home opener is not until right before Easter (weather permitting, of course). Have to believe the coaches are praying things will turn around before they come home.
