News & notes

The Tri-City Valleycats will have their final pre-season game tonight vs. the Empire State Greys, an expansion team in the Frontier League. First pitch is 6:30 pm. The Greys will play their entire schedule on the road, and after tonight, will return to Bruno Stadium next month.

Not a good day for local colleges in post-season play on Friday.

In women's lacrosse, for example, Siena followed its men's team out of the tournament, eliminated by Fairfield, 10-8. Siena finishes 10-8 for the season.

Turning to softball, Rochester defeated RPI to win the Liberty League title, 6-4. The Engineers then won a losers bracket game, beating Ithaca for the 2nd straight day, 5-2. Ithaca had beaten Skidmore in the losers bracket earlier, 7-0. So the order of finish would be:

1. Rochester.
2. RPI.
3. Ithaca.
4. Skidmore.

Elsewhere, Russell Sage was eliminated from the Empire 8 softball tournament by Nazareth, 4-3. The Gators finish at 15-21. Cobleskill defeated Cazenovia in the NAC tournament, 16-5 in 5 innings.

Despite the league title having been decided, the Liberty League has "crossover" games on today's schedule, with RPI playing a doubleheader at Rochester, Skidmore hosting Clarkson for 2, and Union at Ithaca for 2.

If you're looking to go to OTB to place a bet on today's Kentucky Derby, find the nearest parlor, and get there early. NBC's coverage begins four hours before the race itself. OTB will handle wagers on the rest of the Churchill Downs card, and may be broadcasting live from their Clubhouse Racebook in Colonie. I recommend tuning into OTB (Spectrum digital channel 1250) instead of NBC. That way, you can avoid a certain bloviator who's threatened to turn the Run For The Roses into a media circus. If you don't know who I mean, check out The Land of Whatever.
