News & notes

Christian Brothers Academy will have a new coach for hockey this winter, as AD Blaine Drescher has decided to step back after 10 seasons on the Brothers' bench.

Taking Drescher's place is Adrien Melrose, and if that last name sounds familiar, it should. His father, Barry, is currently an NHL analyst for ESPN, and has had ties to the 518 as a player and coach with the Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL. Something tells me we'll see Barry at some CBA games, home and/or away, this winter.

Albany Academy's Kennedy Swedick will compete as an amateur in the Twin Bridges Championship next week, as the LPGA tour stops in Guilderland at Pinehaven Country Club. What used to be known as the Futures, and, later, Symetra, tour is now the Epson tour. Twin Bridges Waste & Recycling is also partnering with WGNA to host a country music concert at Pinehaven, featuring Maddie & Tae and Michael Ray. A clinic will be held at Pinehaven on Tuesday.

The Albany Patroons have to wait an extra three days to play Shreveport in the TBL finals.

The Pats could not make flight arrangements in time for tonight's game, so the game's been moved to Saturday, with the scene changing to Albany on July 6-7, the latter if necessary. The extra rest will benefit both teams, to be sure.

Toronto's Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Siena) pitched 1/3 of an inning Tuesday in the Blue Jays' 6-5 win over Boston. Gage walked 1, and threw just 7 pitches total.

The Tri-City Valleycats kept the momentum going in Canada on Tuesday, downing Trois-Rivieres, 6-3. Joey Gonzalez pitched six innings, fanning four, to pick up his 3rd win. The 'Cats plated 3 runs in the 7th inining, and 1 in the 8th, to ice it.
