News & notes

 Lost in all the news after the draft, former UAlbany baseball player Brad Malm was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Mets. Talk about being under the radar.
============================================
The Albany Empire took advantage of the Carolina Cobras' late season collapse to capture the National Arena League's regular season title by beating the San Antonio Gunslingers, 65-59, at MVP Arena on Saturday night.

The Empire open defense of their title next Saturday vs. Jacksonville.
====================================
For the 2nd straight night, the Tri-City Valleycats blew out the Gateway Grizzlies, this time by a 13-5 count, at Bruno Stadium. DH Denis Phipps hit two more homers, and Brantley Bell & Joe Campagna, the latter a recent addition, added one each.

During the all-star break, the 'Cats dismissed pitching coach Scott Budner, believing his approach to the pitching staff contributed to some embarrassing losses, including two blowouts at the hands of the NY Boulders. Small wonder the 'Cats have come out of the break looking like a team on a mission.
