The next step is taken

Three of the four Section II alums drafted one week ago have signed with the MLB teams that have drafted them.

The lone holdout is Gavin Van Kempen (Maple Hill), drafted by St. Louis, but instead of signing with the Cardinals, Van Kempen has elected to honor his commitment to West Virginia, and will pitch for the Mountaineers next season.

Mike Kennedy (Troy High) signed with Pittsburgh Wednesday for $1 million dollar bonus, and will be heading to the Pirates' rookie league team in Bradenton, Florida, where the Pirates have had spring training for decades.

College graduates Dale Stanavich (Amsterdam/Rutgers) and Luke Gold (Ballston Spa/Boston College) have also signed with their pro teams, Miami & Detroit, respectively, adding to the recent rich history of Section II in MLB. Barring any misfortune, we'll see these four young men in the majors in a few years. We're proud of you, guys.
