High School Fridays: Friday's high school scoreboard, 9/16

Spectrum News 1's Friday Night Matchup served up an instant classic in this week's featured game, a Class AA rematch between Shaker and Christian Brothers Academy. The Blue Bison won at CBA last year, so the Brothers were looking for revenge and remain undefeated in the 2022 season.

Shaker won the opening coin toss, and deferred to the 2nd half, a favored tactic of CBA coach Bob Burns, who promptly made the Bison regret the decision. A steady diet of QB Ronald Jones, Jr. going through the Shaker defense, with a couple of pass plays to Jahmir Pitcher mixed in. culminated in Jones running it in himself from a yard out with 54 seconds left in the 1st quarter gave CBA an early 7-0 lead. Shaker finally went on offense, but as the 2nd quarter began, promptly punted after a 3 and out.

CBA marched back down the field, and Jones ran it in again, this time from 1/2 a yard away thanks to a poorly timed Shaker penalty. On the ensuing kickoff, Nick Cerrone gave Shaker fans something to cheer as he ran it back 94 yards to the house in just 16 seconds. No matter. CBA went back down the other way, and Jones ran it in from 3 yards out. CBA led, 21-7, at the break.

Shaker's offense finally got going in the 2nd half. At halftime, coach Greg Sheeler must've pulled out his Bible and opened to the Book of Malachi.

Malachi Moore, that is.

Nearly halfway through the 3rd quarter, Moore ran it in to draw Shaker within a possession at 21-14. After CBA was stopped on downs, QB Jake Iacobaccio found Kyle Yusef for a 32 yard catch & run. The extra point knotted the game at 21, and it stayed that way as we went to the 4th quarter. Pitcher's patience was rewarded as Jones found him near the end zone to get the lead back to 7. However, Iacoobaccio, with 19 seconds left in regulation, hit Anthony Luciano in the end zone, and we were headed to overtime.

Shaker won the coin toss in OT, and again deferred. That would cost them.

CBA moved back in front as Jones hit Chuck Volans for a 5 yard strike. The extra point made it 35-28. Not to be outdone, and seeing his opposite number score three times in the first half, Iacobaccio took it in himself. However, a desperation pass for a 2 point conversion fell harmlessly to the turf, incomplete, and CBA escapes with a 35-34 win to go to 3-0 on the season, 1-0 in Class AA play. Shaker falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in Class AA.
