News & notes

Will UAlbany get national television attention this weekend?

The Great Danes open the 2022 season deep in the heart of Texas, visiting Baylor. Everyone expects the high scoring Bears, out of the Big 12, to shred Albany's defense the way cartoon icon Yogi Bear goes through picnic baskets. The best Albany coach Greg Gattuso can hope for is for the Danes to avoid being just another non-league tomato can to bolster Baylor's profile.

Albany Patroons coach/GM Will Brown has agreed to return for a 2nd season with the team after losing the league title in heartbreaking fashion. Now, if only he can get the attention of a certain down-on-its-luck paper across the river from Albany to pay attention.

You know what I mean. El Cheapo Media (The Record/Saratogian) hasn't given the Patroons the time of day since they entered The Basketball League. El Cheapo's corporate parent is so cheap, it isn't funny.

The Tri-City Valleycats know they have to win out to make the playoffs. Step one came Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Sussex County, 7-3 & 9-6, the latter in 8 innings (minor league doubleheaders are 7 innings each) on a walk-off 3 run HR by Carson McCusker. WROW morning host Ben Patten gave the Miners extra runs in the 1st game, and, as of press time, hadn't been corrected, as he has repeatedly read the score of game 1 as 7-6. Don't know where Ben got his info.

The series concludes tonight.

Troy High was supposed to start their women's tennis & soccer schedules on Wednesday, but as of press time, their tennis opener vs. Columbia, and a non-league soccer match vs. Lansingburgh either were not reported, or postponed. I'm inclined to think tennis season is being held to next week. The men's soccer team opens today at Amsterdam.
