News & notes

The Tri-City Valleycats' playoff chances are getting slimmer as the weekend brings the final regular season series, with the Empire State Greys returning for one final visit.

Tri-City sought to sweep the Sussex County Miners, but the Miners salvaged the final game of the series on Thursday, 1-0. Ex-Valleycat Juan Silverio was held in check in the series. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he returns to Troy in 2023.

In happier 'Cats news, DH-OF Denis Phipps, who rewrote the team's record book for homers, was named DH of The Year by the Frontier League prior to Thursday's game. Though the regular season doesn't end until Sunday, they're handing out the hardware now in sharp contrast to the majors, which don't announce end-of-the-season awards until after the post-season. Second generation player Brantley Bell was named league MVP, and currently is in line for the batting title, as he leads with a .369 average heading into last night's game.

Albany native Bobby Fish is a free agent again.

Two weeks prior to All Elite Wrestling's Albany debut on September 14 (Dynamite), Fish's contract with the promotion expired, and it was reported that AEW would not renew. There are those that believe Fish could return to the WWE, more specifically NXT, now that Paul "Triple H" Levesque is in charge. A series of injuries have dogged Fish since the end of his days in Ring of Honor, which might've played a role in AEW's decision.

The belief from this desk is that Fish would be brought back to NXT as a coach (and part-time wrestler), just like Santana Garrett, who returned to NXT as a coach earlier this week. Former Undisputed Era teammate Roderick Strong, who is being set up to split from the Diamond Mine faction, will need a new partner in short order.
