News & notes

You had to know UAlbany wasn't going to play out the 2022 football season without winning.

The Great Danes picked up their first win on Saturday, besting Central Connecticut State, 45-26. Graduate running back Todd Sibley, Jr. got it started with a 97 yard TD run on the first offensive play of the game. On the other side of the ball, defensive tackle Joe Greaney returned a fumble 77 yards to the house to lock the game down for UAlbany (1-3), heading into a bye week.

The Danes will travel to New Jersey to play Monmouth on October 8.

The schedule makers in the Colonial Council proved to be cruel to its two remaining Troy schools on Saturday.

LaSalle and Lansingburgh, both playing on back-to-back days, had one other thing in common. Both were shut out against Suburban Council opponents.

Cameron Mingle had the only goal of the game as Columbia downed the Cadets, 1-0, catching the visitors sky high after pitching a shutout of their own less than 24 hours earlier. Meanwhile, winless Lansingburgh, which has scored a grand total of 3 goals this season, crossed town to Picken Field, and were chased off by Troy, 9-0. The Knights (0-10, 0-8 Colonial Council) are locked in the basement in the league. Troy won its 2nd straight, both in non-league play, and both via shutout, to improve to 3-6 overall (0-4 Suburban Council).

Albany native Bobby Fish may be testing the waters for a run with Impact Wrestling.

Fish appeared at Friday's Victory Road show, acknowledging he hasn't signed a contract with the 20 year old promotion, but odds are they brought him in just in time for Bound For Glory, which will be at the Washington Avenue Armory on October 7. Because AXS-TV, a sister company to Impact, is a premium channel on Spectrum Cable, Impact and its parent company, Anthem Sports & Entertainment of Canada, needed someone with ties to the Albany market to draw more fans for the show, and Fish certainly fills the bill.
