News & notes

When Troy High opens its football season Saturday afternoon with a lunch hour matinee at Albany, a familiar face will roam the sidelines.

Baseball coach Chris Stack, who led the Flying Horses to a Class A baseball title in 2021, and reached the semi-finals three months ago, takes over for John Barber, who couldn't shake the diminishing returns that led to his leaving Holy Trinity for Troy last year. Per James Allen of Spectrum News 1 and the Albany Times-Union, Troy is now being credited with a forfeit last year, likely against South Glens Falls, which was unable to make it to Picken Field on two tries due to COVID issues. The Bulldogs will be in town September 16 for Troy's home opener.

Allen foresees a 5-3 (3-2 division) record for Stack and Troy, finishing 3rd in the Capital Division. The division losses, he figures, will be against the two teams he puts ahead of Troy, Averill Park & Amsterdam. The non-division loss figures to be Niskayuna, I'll guess. However, judging from Allen's forecast, he also sees Troy regaining the Collar City Cup from LaSalle on September 23 at Sutton Field, and has the Cadets finishing 4th. Albany moves to the Grasso Division, with Mohonasen moving up from Class B, but still finishing last.

If you follow the logic, Troy would be 3-0 leading into the Averill Park game on September 30. If Troy does get out to a fast start, and reverts to its dominant form under Bob Burns (now at CBA), Stack, who has been an assistant coach in football, could add another title to his resume.

As the NFL season starts tonight, some shuffling in the T-U's handicapping pool. With Liana Bonavita (WTEN) and  Jesse MacWilliam (Spectrum) having left town, the T-U brought in night sports editor Kyra Santicola onto the panel, along with Spectrum news reporter Jackson Wang and WTEN sports anchor Griffin Haas (the only sports guy at the station at the moment), joining the usual suspects (Allen, Rodger Wyland, Pete Dougherty, Chet Davis).
