News & notes

When Troy High closes its men's soccer regular season next Saturday at Bethlehem, there may be a bit of a culture shock awaiting the Flying Horses.

That's because the Eagles have senior star Claire Hutton, who moved over from the women's varsity, on their roster, and making a difference. Hutton is the subject of a front page feature article in today's Albany Times-Union that explains her decision to move to the men's team. She could be an x-factor for the Eagles when sectional play begins a little more than a week from now.

UAlbany football coach Greg Gattuso has a right to be angry this morning, after the Great Danes lost to Monmouth, 38-31, Saturday in New Jersey. The officials decided against a targeting call against a Monmouth defender that left an Albany receiver needing medical attention. Something tells me that the zebras, knowing Albany has yet to win a league game, ruled in favor of the home team so they could get out of Dodge and head home. Gattuso should file a complaint with the league office.

RPI's ECAC hockey team opened its season after two exhibitions last week with a Homecoming Weekend series against Mercyhurst. The Engineers swept the two games, 6-3 on Friday, and a 3-2 overtime thriller on Saturday. Unfortunately, the games were not on RPI TV for some reason. Maybe the fact that the school has a deal with ESPN+ might have something to do with it.

Speaking of Troy High, the men's soccer team's losing streak has reached five in a row after a 7-0 loss to Columbia on Saturday. The Horses have 2 games left, at home vs. Niskayuna on Tuesday, and the aforementioned finale at Bethlehem next Saturday.

Hudson High has forfeited their remaining games this season due to a lack of eligible, available players. Sounds like another merger of schools for football looms on the horizon.
