News & notes

We now know who will be joining Averill Park & Troy High in the former's pre-season women's basketball tournament, which tips off with JV play tomorrow afternoon.

South Glens Falls is also returning for the 2nd straight year, finishing last in last year's event. Columbia will be the 3rd Suburban Council school in the event, and will play the Bulldogs in the opener, while Troy & Averill Park will square off in the nightcap.

Speaking of Troy, the Flying Horses kicked off bowling season with a bang on Tuesday, defeating Colonie in the home opener at Uncle Sam Lanes. Olivia DeCitise, named a captain this season, led the way with a 723 triple. The Horses are playing against Burnt Hills as we write.

We have to close on a sad note.

Mike Adessa, who led RPI to their first national hockey title in 31 years in 1985, passed away earlier this week. Adessa played college football at Holy Cross before turning to coaching, and taking his knowledge of x's & o's to hockey. He later served as a scout in the NHL with Detroit, Calgary, & Vancouver.

We'll close by taking you back to the closing moments of the 1985 NCAA title game vs. Providence, which aired on ESPN. The late Tom Mees is on the call, and there are a few postgame interviews.

Rest in peace, coach.
