News & notes

A quick correction from yesterday. Saratoga and the Capital District Jets will play their quarter-final hockey game on Thursday instead of Wednesday, although the weather forecast both nights might make the point rather moot. The winner will play the winner of Wednesday's CBA-Adirondack game.

Through the first weekend of the softball season, George Washington University is at 0-3 after getting swept by East Carolina. Brett Young (Albany Academy/VCU/Siena) went 4-13 in the series with an RBI, a run scored, but six strikeouts. Anthony Germinerio (UAlbany/Averill Park) has yet to see the mound for the Colonials, and could this weekend.

Likewise, Siena opened the season 0-3 after getting swept by Central Florida in Orlando, including two blowout losses. Sunday's game was called after 7 innings, as the Saints were routed, 11-1. Next up will be a 4 game weekend set at Jacksonville.

In contrast, Siena's softball team is 5-0 to start the season. Ava Fitzmaurice, a Greenville native returning to the 518 as a graduate transfer from New Haven, led the way against North Carolina Central on Sunday with a home run in going 2-3 with a walk as Siena won, 8-1. This weekend, the Lady Saints will be in Florida and play Valparaiso, Oakland, Notre Dame, Dartmouth, Florida International, and Tennessee-Martin. Six games, six opponents, three days. Whew!

UAlbany's baseball & softball teams will begin play this weekend. The Great Danes will open the baseball schedule with a series against Hofstra, while the women will play five games in three days in South Carolina. Two games each vs. St. Joseph's & Coastal Carolina, with a single game vs. Mt. St. Mary's in the middle. Best of luck to the Danes.

Basketball sectionals resume tonight, but with inclement weather in the forecast tomorrow & Thursday, some games on those two nights may be adversely affected. Schools are otherwise on winter break this week, but if you have e-mail access to your school's athletic departments, you might be able to find out if your school's game is being played.
