A Storm of goals (Guilderville @ LaSalle, 2/20/23)

A scant more than three weeks ago, LaSalle took down the Storm, 3-1, on the road. Today, before a near-sellout crowd at Frear Park, in what will be the Cadets' final home game of the season, "Guilderville", a mash-up of Guilderland, Schalmont, Mohonasen, Voorheesville, & Scotia-Glenville, sought revenge against the 7th seeded Cadets.

Based on the reaction of the home fans, it seemed as though the Storm had a 7th man in one of the referees, based on the disparity of penalties called, a ratio of about 3-1, given how many power plays the Storm had, which goes against the usual post-season mentality of letting the players play, and decide the game for themselves.

Fortunately for LaSalle, they neutralized the perceived bias by killing off every penalty, and scoring 2 shorthanded goals in the process.

But, we're getting ahead of ourselves.

Almost midway through the first period, LaSalle struck first, as freshman sensation Chase Rose jammed the puck into the net. Mere seconds later, Ethan Lashway did the same thing, and the Cadets had a 2-0 lead after the frame. However, things got chippy as time expired in the period, and a brief scuffle ensued. LaSalle's Aiden Bell was one of two players given game misconducts, his afternoon over early.

Faced with a 2 man disadvantage to start the 2nd period, LaSalle kept the Storm off the scoreboard until an even strength goal at the midway point of the frame, sandwiched around two more goals by Rose, as he completed the hat trick. Braxton Shields added another, and the Cadets were comfortably in front, 5-1, heading into the 3rd period. Michael Nocera ended the scoring with a goal in the 3rd, as the Cadets roll into the quarter-finals, 6-1.

Up next for LaSalle (10-10-1 overall) will be #2 Bethlehem, and a shot at revenge. The Eagles shut out LaSalle, 4-0, on February 11.

Other scores:

CBA 5, Mohawks 1.

Albany Academy 4, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa 3. First upset of the tournament nets Academy a date with #3 Shenendehowa on Wednesday while CBA plays defending champion Adirondack. Saratoga at the CD Jets rounds out the Wednesday schedule.
